Historia
This is a story from the Canterbury Tales I: Modern Verse Translation collection. Chaucer's greatest work, written towards the end of the fourteenth century, paints a brilliant picture of medieval life, society and values. The stories range from the romantic, courtly idealism of "The Knight's Tale" to the joyous bawdy of the Miller's; all are told with a freshness and vigor in this modern verse translation that make them a delight to hear.

Historia
Here we see Twain on a somewhat personal level. Penniless and having just lost his wife and one of his children, Twain turns to writing about God, Christianity, and the many curious natures of man. This collection was so controversial that his daughter prohibited its publication until 52 years after his death.

Historia
Penniless and downtrodden at the loss of his wife and one of his daughters, Samuel Clemens turned to writing. The short stories and essays in Letters from the Earth find Clemens—under the pseudonym of Mark Twain—at perhaps his most quizzical and questioning state ever. Written as diary entries, Twain penned a series of letters from the point of view of a dejected angel on Earth who observes the many curious natures of man. These pieces, gathered by Twain's literary executor, feature sharp takes on the inconsistencies of Christianity and farcical criticisms of American life.

Historia
Beware the gossips! Lady Sneerwell and her hireling, Snake, are certainly up to no good in this timeless send-up of hypocritical manners. Thanks to their scandal-mongering, the comely Lady Teazle must fend off the slanderous barbs that have caught the ear of her elderly husband - as well as every other gossip in London! What follows is a torrent of mistaken identities and sex-crazed scheming in which the upper classes have never looked so low class.

Disappointed in production without text
Revisado: 04-17-17
What would have made The School for Scandal better?
To include the text would be a simple enough addition and sorrily needed, since the play as produced is severely abridged.

Historia
Proteus loves Julia in Verona, Valentine loves Silvia in Milan. But when Proteus meets Silvia, he falls for her too, and the heartbroken Julia sets out in pursuit. This delightful and sometimes disquieting early comedy of love lost and found offers lyrical poetry, disguise, clowning, outlaws, and a most unreliable dog.

Great but for two faults

The pronunciation of Milan was odd. And I suppose jazz helps to improve the play for modern audiences. It would otherwise be old and boring?

Historia
Viewed as too libelous to print in England until 1968, the title essay in this collection reveals the abuse Orwell experienced as a child at an expensive and snobbish boarding school and offers insights into his lifelong concern for the oppressed. "Why I Write" describes Orwell's sense of political purpose, and the classic essay "Politics and the English Language" insists on clarity and precision in communication in order to avoid the Newspeak later described in 1984.

Great book deserves better recording. Skips horribly
Revisado: 11-11-15
This is a terrific collection of essays read quite well by Frederick Davidson. The unfortunate part is that the recording while clear is pockmarked all through with skipping. Dreadful really.

Historia
"It doesn't take an Einstein to understand modern physics," says Professor Wolfson at the outset of these 24 lectures on what may be the most important subjects in the universe: relativity and quantum physics. Both have reputations for complexity. But the basic ideas behind them are, in fact, simple and comprehensible by anyone. These dynamic and illuminating lectures begin with a brief overview of theories of physical reality starting with Aristotle and culminating in Newtonian or "classical" physics.

Audio without the visuals diminishes series
Revisado: 07-28-15
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Richard Wolfson?
Not without the visual examples. The professor includes these teaching tools and organized his lectures with plenty of references to the visual examples. The lack of video is an important lesson when considering whether to purchase another series from The Great Courses
What didn’t you like about Professor Richard Wolfson’s performance?
His performance was great, but I didn't have the benefit of experiencing the entire thing
Was Einstein's Relativity and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics for Non-Scientists, 2nd Edition worth the listening time?
Yes, but without the visuals, much much less so
