I enjoyed this story but listened to it before "The Lost Angel". Turns out it's a sequel to that. Wish I'd known. Dan Starkey does great voices, and even captures Capaldi's tone. Really good, just listen to the other one first!

I really enjoyed this story and also The Lost Magic, but I wish these would have been labelled as being a multi-part story, as this is #1 and that one is #2 and I listened out of order. Also, I know these were done for British people, but it's jarring (as an American) to think of the American characters to see flashlights and think of them as torches (we think of torches as sticks with fire at the end) or to think of their sneakers as "trainers". I know the British words, but it jars me out of the story.

Fun audio documentary on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

This short piece explores Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in relation to both his most famous creation and other works which are lesser known, showcasing his penchant for adventure. I especially loved the audio clips of the man himself and his daughter -- one doesn't expect that from a person who is so long gone. It was also interesting to hear from some of the author's descendants and hear about some of the family treasures. The documentary made me want more, so off I went to "Doyle for the Defense" by Margalit Fox, which I would also highly recommend.

I bought this title a while back because it intrigued me. Listening to the recent Audible Original documentary on Conan Doyle, I returned to listen. This is a fascinating book which gives more insight into Conan Doyle, the Victorian legal system, and the prejudices of the day. The book is well organized and I found myself racing through the title, gripped in its power. Highly recommended.

Engrossing book, imperfect structure

I have been hearing about this book for years and finally took the plunge. I started it and almost gave up because the book started in the middle of the story, assuming the reader knew all the details of people like Alger Hiss, but it turns out that was just the introduction. Once you get to Chapter 3 (on the Audible markings) it becomes a clear and thoughtful book which gives a great overall impression of important figures and events of the 50s and what shaped them. I was entranced. Yes, it didn't cover everything (polio being one notable exception), but I learned a lot about the time period and the book cleared up some common misconceptions of the time for me. I also gained new insights into things I thought I knew about subjects such as I Love Lucy. My main critique is that the book didn't have a good final chapter--often at the end of a book an author will give some conclusions, talk about a summary thesis, or wrap things up with a sense of closure. This book just ends. After a long book, that was very frustrating. The narrator was good, but I could have used more vocal variety from his delivery. This is definitely a worthwhile listen if you're interested in the time period.

I'm a fan of Tony Horwitz and have read most of his work including Confederates in the Attic, which is an older title. This is an interesting travelogue across the South following in the footsteps of Frederick Law Olmsted. I appreciated learning more about Olmsted and seeing the South through Horwitz's eyes as he went on his adventures, allowing most of the people to speak for themselves while later noting that some of the conversations were dispiriting. The narrator was very pleasant to listen to. I'd highly recommend this book.

I've got this book as an audio and as a book, and I've given it to a number of other people. Chuck Wendig understands how to tell a damn fine story, and he explains it with lots of examples from popular culture and movies. This book makes me appreciate what I'm reading and watching, and it helps me to write better. Besides, it's funny as all heck, unless you mind a little off color language. Personally, I'd hate this to be sanitized to PG level, but keep that in mind if that sort of thing bugs you. The narrator is perfect for this. I've listened to it multiple times, and will certainly listen many more.

I enjoyed Michael Pollan's exploration into a substance most of us consume every day, including hearing about his own experiments with eliminating and moderating caffeine in his life. I also enjoyed the history he discussed about tea and coffee. Informative and diverting.

Someone recommended these to me because I'm a big fan of Midsommer Murders. I am loving these, and I love that Neil Dudgeon is the narrator. His American accent is really good, too, although I think all audio books should get a few editor listens to catch mispronunciations. For example there's no way a British guy would know that when you use the Jewish expression and call someone a nudge (also sometimes spelled nooge) you wouldn't pronounce it to rhyme with fudge. I plan to listen to the whole series. Such fun!

Another great mystery from Sue Grafton. Perfect narrator for this book and another way to enjoy her work. Thinking of revisiting the whole series in audio.
