I first purchased and listened to this book a good 10 years ago, just finished listening to it again, without doubt one of my most favourite books. How the author weaves all the personal stories of each athlete into the race and how he explains so much about running and biology and its history is simply amazing. I had two 18km and 10km runs within days myself listening to the book. I can see myself listening again in a few years

The book I was really looking forward to failed to deliver. Took me ages to get through it, as the content became very monotonous particularly when he was in prison where it just seemed an endless loop of the day to day monotony of being in prison, this should have all been one chapter. Would have enjoyed hearing more about why the Russian government was so afraid of him including details of the scandals him and his team have uncovered. Its as if they wanted to get a book out quickly to keep Navalny in the public consciousness but a book of his observations of the daily boredom of jail as per his diary was the wrong way to do it.

Narration was very difficult to get used to, had to listed a 3x speed.
Story was not that interesting, did not really go behind the curtains, fairly bland really

Guess what? Insurance companies use data to price their policies, supermarkets use data to offer coupons, political parties use data to tailor their campaigns, universities use data to select students, employers use data to screen resumes..... tell us something new Cathy.

I would be interested to read the data on how many times the acronym WMD was used in the book, I would guess well into 3 digits.

Six and a half hours of whine cut down though by listening at 1.5 speed.

If you have watched the Netflix documentary don’t bother buying the book lots of repetition. Lots of cliches, lots of Arnold talking about how great he is. 3 stars as some parts interesting but on the whole a skip

Huge thumbs down from me. Found the entire book most annoying, gave up about 2/3rds through. The commencement address part was cringeworthy she used the phrase pass out, die, poop what must have been 20 times. Not really sure what the point of the book was to brag about how an Ivy League graduate had become successful in spite of all her “challenges”. Seemed everything was just me me me no real lessons for anyone listening.

Too much talking about each and every race which all really sound the same. Narrator gave the impression of arrogance on behalf of the author

Fairly disappointing listen. I gave up half way through.

Basically two parts to the book intertwined:

One is the author's story of her traumatic birth to her child and subsequent depression. I found this a fairly unnecessary repetition which seemed to surface in every chapter. This would be more appropriate in an autobiography.

The second is different accounts of the author's meeting with people as a chaplain, a lot of these chapters focussed on what was happening at that time of the visit and how the author felt and less so about what the people on death's doorstep had to share.

I did not really learn anything from the stories. I would have liked to have heard what people regretted in their lives or what they would do different if they could re-visit the past. Perhaps what they would tell thier 20 year old self or just generally what day to day things they would do or not do if they were given a second lease on life.
