Historia
The world has changed around 79-year-old librarian Millicent Carmichael, a.k.a. Missy. Though quick to admit that she often found her roles as a housewife and mother less than satisfying, Missy once led a bustling life driven by two children, an accomplished and celebrated husband, and a Classics degree from Cambridge. Now, her husband is gone, her daughter is estranged after a shattering argument, and her son has moved to his wife's native Australia, taking Missy's beloved only grandchild half-a-world away.

Excellent book & Narration
Revisado: 11-07-24
Was about to give up on this book as it was a bit depressing. But I know when I give up too early on a book, I can potentially miss something very special…and this was special. It’s life, it’s living, loving, losing and gaining. It’s about everything that can touch your heart deeply. Overall this book was very good and the narration, excellent!

But in this inviting refuge, a mystery begins to swirl. Alice knows things about Brynn, about all of them, that she shouldn’t.

Absolutely Wonderful!
Revisado: 09-05-24
This novel was pure magic and love and life! It was beautiful and compelling, sweet, serious and funny. It’s bursting with life and everything we encounter on our journey through it. I don’t think I’ve listened to a more moving story than this in a time. I highly recommend this book as well as her others. However, I think this may be her best!

Fantastic story!
Revisado: 08-16-24
This has to be one of my favorite books and indeed, one of my most beloved authors. And the narration by Xe Sands is as always, wonderful. Fascinating story and I was surprised at the end when I thought it was wrapped up, yet it clearly was not!
I’ll be listening to everything Audible has to offer from Webb. I can’t wait to get to the next one listen yet I do wish the characters would carry over. It’s hard letting them go.

And yet, sometimes it feels like she’s invisible. All of that changes when a book of fairy tales arrives on her doorstep. Inside, Martha finds a dedication written by her best friend—her grandmother Zelda—who died under mysterious circumstances years ago. When Martha discovers a clue within the book that her grandmother may still be alive, she becomes determined to discover the truth.

An Amazing Story!
Revisado: 08-04-24
Such a great listen! And the narrator was just as amazing! She brought the story and characters to life in such a way that they might be sitting before you.
The story was definitely emotional. If you’ve ever felt suppressed in a relationship and/or freed yourself from one, this will hit home. Of course, you can’t choose your family, their decisions or how you’re raised. HOWEVER, as you grow older, you CAN choose YOUR life, YOUR priorities and the way you choose to live it. This is the biggest takeaway for me from this book and I think it will hold a very special place and value for me, for quite some time.
No one says you need to perpetuate the past. Not even you! Make new memories, hold yourself in high value and draw close to those that bring true happiness to your life and warmth to your heart.

Great, Easy Listen
Revisado: 07-23-24
This is the second book I’ve listened to by this author. She’s quickly becoming a favorite! The story was very good and I found myself relating to the main character, she sounds like someone I’d enjoy meeting and could see us becoming friends! There are in a sense, 3 main characters within the story but even the supporting cast of characters were interesting people.
I think I’d enjoy reading those Georgia Rory books as well!
Must mention this though, I wasn’t nuts about the narrator. I haven’t listened to a book with her narration before and I’m not so sure I’d jump at the chance again. There’s nothing wrong with her per se, but she lacks a certain warmth or intensity I would like to have heard for these characters. It’s not so about reading the book out loud as it is becoming a storyteller for a little while, and I just wasn’t feeling that from her.

So good I didn’t want it to end!
Revisado: 06-20-24
This book was fantastic! I can’t wait to listen to more of her books! I can’t say how many emotions I went through while listening to this perfect gem because I was right there with the characters. Typically, I don’t listen to books that hop back and forth from one period of time to another. However, this set a wonderful pace for the story and added great depth to the overall storyline and each character.
This book was magical, had great heart and was very thought provoking, as I can’t imagine how difficult “Operation Pied-Piper” must have been for all involved. Truly, a great read by an excellent writer!

Incredible Follow-Up Novel!
Revisado: 09-09-23
This second and last book in the series was wonderful! Personally I enjoyed every moment of it. I’m not sure what a previous reviewer meant by a bad ending. Gregory’s writing has never been sub-par IMO, nor have I ever wondered how she could have written such an ending to a story. I thought the ending was fantastic but then again, I suppose you have to decide what you see as the “good” side. I thought the build up and ending was phenomenal!
The same reviewer also wanted to know how Ned’s story fit. It’s a very sad, parallel story that speaks not only volumes for the time period but also to who we ultimately decide to love as well as who we choose as family, friends and neighbors. It reflects everything happening in the main character’s lives.
As I remarked in my review of the first book, the narrator was excellent! I intend to look for her as the reader in other Audible books, I liked her that much!

Wonderful!
Revisado: 09-05-23
As always, Gregory delivers an amazing, raw story that was read by a fantastic narrator. The story is gritty, romantic and far too real. The characters, as with all her work, were complicated, had a great depth of feeling and contained those I both hated and dearly loved.
For as much as I romanticize Gregory’s historical fiction and dream of living in those days, it’s far too scary! As a woman, I’m grateful for the world I live in presently and thank God for the advancement of society!
Well worth the listen!

Excellent first book in series!
Revisado: 08-13-23
I liked the narrator right away. As for Rosalyn, I came to love her, cheer for her and had really hoped she’d make it through all the adversity. I was truly worried about her circumstances while serving in Sloan house. And what a family the Sloan’s were! As much as I romanticize the time and wonder what it would be like to have that much money, I’d never fit in! The Sloan’s were absolutely horrendous! I’m sure that wasn’t every family, but I have a feeling there were enough similar to them.
I spent my life living in Chicago and thinking about what the World’s Fair must have been like is very exciting. We have few remnants because as they said, the buildings weren’t built to last. But we still have the, “Wooded Island” and one singular building, now the Museum of Science & Industry. It was my favorite museum while growing up! Having all the normal crime within the city (nothing has changed in that regard) a ton more people, too few policemen and H.H. Holmes, it was as dangerous as it was exciting!
Overall, a very good book! I’m really looking forward to starting the next book in the three part series!

Great narrator, Good short story
Revisado: 08-11-23
I don’t listen to a whole bunch of short stories but this one was included with the type of Audible subscription I have. I’m really happy too because not only did I get to hear this really good story, Audible introduced me to another great author! I’ll be listening to Harrow’s “The Ten Thousand Doors of January” next and her latest book, “Starling House” to be released in October, is in my Wishlist to Pre-Order!
Firstly, I wanted to comment that a previous reviewer mentioned that the narrator was terrible. I don’t know if we listened to the same book? Compared to other narrators, there are some that hands down, I could listen to all day and some that are downright horrible and monotone. Jennifer Nittoso has a good, clear voice and imo, put a lot of feeling into the story. She certainly was not terrible and I’d happily listen to her narrate another book. I think she was perfect for this type of book.
This story was so imaginative! What I truly loved is that it had a heart, as a previous reviewer had noted. It also had a bitter sweet lesson. Childhood does indeed come to an end, usually and extremely abruptly at that! I tend to think of it akin to hitting a brick wall. Typically, as it had with the girl in the story as well as myself, it came at the expense of my first heartbreak.
The ending was a bit of a surprise! Reality comes calling for us all, like death and taxes! LOL It usually comes unexpectedly, no matter what age we are when it finds us. Our age doesn’t necessarily matter when it does happen, unfortunately. It’s the fact that we can never go back once it happens, that has the biggest impact.
