Historia
Breathe, smile, and move on. When you’re writing the next chapter in your rags-to-riches-to-rags story, you need about a million quotes like that. I might have been short on inspiration, but I had determination. That was it, except for a very young cousin and a very old campervan, but I was all about starting over. Nobody knew me in New Zealand other than a series of café and motel managers, and anonymity suited me fine. Manlessness suited me even finer.

I Love Returning to Rosalind James’ New Zealand
Revisado: 08-14-24
Before its release, I had been looking forward to listening to the audio version of the latest Rosalind James book, Catch a Kiwi, and I was not disappointed as I enjoyed it very much. With the New Zealand setting and so many returning characters from previous books, it was a lot like coming home. The book touched on many themes, not the least was about new beginnings, whether geographically, emotionally, mentally and so on. The narration is excellent and does so much to bring the written words to life. It is a very enjoyable and entertaining book and fans of the romance genre, especially those who are fans of Rosalind James’ work, will love it. If I have any criticism, I think it ran a bit too long and that brought a bit of repetition. A solid four stars.
I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I was neither compensated nor expected to write a positive review. The opinions stated are solely my own.

Historia
Geoffrey Lushington, Mayor of Marlow, dies suddenly during a Town Council meeting. When traces of aconite—also known as the queen of poisons—are found in his coffee cup, the police realize he was murdered. But who did it? And why? The police bring Judith, Suzie and Becks in to investigate as Civilian Advisors right from the start, so they have free rein to interview suspects and follow the evidence to their heart’s content, which is perfect because Judith has no time for rules and standard procedure.

Very Disappointing
Revisado: 07-10-24
I had listened and enjoyed to the first two books in the series. Sadly this one fell very short. It was repetitive (running around and accusing literally every one of murder) and convoluted. I don’t recommend and am highly unlikely to read another book in the series.

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Historia
Being sentenced by a woman in a black robe is not a meet-cute. Quinn Jeffries follows the rules. A judge in small-town Sinful, Montana, doesn’t have much room for missteps, and when you spend your childhood training for the Olympics, you don’t have time for anything but discipline anyway. And, see? It’s worked! Her life is just fine. Of course, it doesn’t include any romance, but her new six-first-dates plan could fix that. She just has to be feminine and beguiling, or maybe marginally less take-charge. Too bad she doesn’t know how.

Entertaining Book, Superior Narration
Revisado: 11-07-23
I read Born to Sin in its written incarnation and then listened to it a few weeks later as an audiobook. I can honestly say that this is one book that really came alive for me when I listened to it, a great testament to Emma Wilder’s acting. She had very good material to start with as Rosalind James has delivered another heartfelt (and spicy) book about finding love, whether for the very first time or a second time following the tragic death of a life partner. The two main characters are strong and engaging. I enjoyed the interactions between Quinn and Troy, though was occasionally a bit uncomfortable with the frank discussions between Beckett and his 11 year old daughter. I wish Janey had been 12, not just because of that but also because her behavior in general seemed that silly year more advanced. A minor point.
There was a mystery towards the end of the book that, while entertaining, seemed a bit out of place. That said, I really enjoyed it.
Emma Wilder has done a superior job with the reading of this book. She truly brought the book alive for me.
This book is well worth listening to for anyone who enjoys a good romance. Rosalind James will be over-the-moon while reading it. Four and a half stars.

Love from a Different Perspective
Revisado: 09-23-23
Just for Me (Escape to New Zealand Book 15) once again proves how talented Rosalind James is at crafting an entertaining story filled with likable, vulnerable characters navigating the road to happily ever after. This is Hayden and Luke’s story, both of whom have been featured in previous books. Part of their story is recognizable as a secondary tale in a previous book, but this book fleshes out their story and highlights many of the travails a same sex couple might endure. I liked both Hayden, always a good guy, and Luke, who is far more closed up having been afraid of living the life he wanted for fear of losing his career. One of the pleasures of an Escape to New Zealand book is the occasional appearance of characters from previous books and Just for Me is no different, which is a plus. This book does a nice job of offering romance from a different but very much the same perspective.
The narration by Emma Wilder is, as always, outstanding.
This is a very entertaining and solid listen. I recommend it. Fans of The Escape to New Zealand series are sure to love it. Four stars.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

I loved this book. The synopsis sounded unusual but I bought it anyway. I listened to it in two days. Amazing.
I just listened to it a second time, months later as it is our book club selection for this month. I enjoyed it as much the second time. Truly an exceptional book.

Toni and Agatha are in the car on the way to Officer Bill Wong’s long-awaited wedding when, much to their shock, a naked young man bursts through a hedge on the side of the road and comes running toward them. Terrified, he explains that he has just seen a dead body in the woods. Toni lends him an old t-shirt to cover himself, Agatha calls the police, and the young man takes them to the spot where he saw the body, across from a meadow where the Mircester Naturist Club is due to have its annual summer barbecue.
