loved this series, unique culture and world building. book 3 felt a little long winded in sections and could've been wrapped up more seamlessly. overall still a good read.

Historia
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

16 hours too long
Revisado: 09-11-24
I love the author's other works, and thoroughly enjoyed the other books in the beartown series, but I haven't been this frustrated by a book in a long time. About 90 of the middle chapters need to be edited out. there were so many tangents and characters that weren't necessary and just lost the plot. the only reason I didn't return the book is because it would close out a series that I had previously enjoyed. narration was great.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

empathy & bridging family generations.
Revisado: 08-05-24
It's been a long time since a book moved me in such a deep and painful way. The narrative of being confined to a woman's life before shipping off and the stories of being at war were hard but still easily readable. It was the returning home that was almost impossible to bear, but I needed a conclusion. The struggle and grief in the return made me begin to understand why so many re-enlist, because at least that part made sense and was survivable, the return was so heartbreaking. On a side note my Father is a Vietnam vet, one like many, who does not talk about it. I was born in the late 80s so decades had passed by that point. We call each other and talk about the books we're reading. In talking about this book, a dialogue has opened up and he shared a few moments. I know how big this is for us and am just so thankful for a chance to understand the history, and my father, better. Well written & narrated, definitely worth the read.

Almost goes places but falls short
Revisado: 06-25-23
The book was well written and the voice over was well read. However the story lacks any follow through. It almost goes places but not quite all the way.I found myself hoping throughout the story that this book would be more than it was and it never delivered.

fun Sci fi novel. amazing narration on all the characters. the way the chapters jump around requires concentration otherwise it can prove somewhat confusing, however the style provides a winding road of knowledge to drive the story forward in an engaging way. excited to read the rest of the series.

easy listening and a fun story
Revisado: 07-18-22
the narrator (within the book) and the voice over narrator were both outstanding. they pair well and make you feel as though you are truly reading the letters of Benjamin. slow start then very fast paced through some of the adventure and new characters I wish had more development. I would listening to a second part where some of the characters reunite on a new journey of sorts.

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Should have been boring but wasn't
Revisado: 07-01-22
The author does a very good job with the narration the narration. She is very intelligent and it comes across in her writing but not in a way that is hard to follow along. It was a well crafted and intricate story that should have been boring yet somehow was brought to life in such an interesting way. I kept guessing at Pivots in the story But the straightforwardness of this book was the most surprising result. This is not normally a book that I would read but I was recommended it by a friend and enjoyed it thoroughly. I am keen to listen to the author's other books
