Historia
When Hisham Matar was a 19-year-old university student in England, his father was kidnapped. One of the Qaddafi regime's most prominent opponents in exile, he was held in a secret prison in Libya. Hisham would never see him again. But he never gave up hope that his father might still be alive. "Hope," as he writes, "is cunning and persistent." Twenty-two years later, after the fall of Qaddafi, the prison cells were empty, and there was no sign of Jaballa Matar. Hisham returned with his mother and wife to the homeland he never thought he'd go back to again.

I thought it was beautifully written. I was overcome by sadness for the evil perpetrated by Libya’s government, Gadaffi and his regime.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

It is 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man, faces into his busiest season. Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, Bill makes a discovery that forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church.

The most poignant and wrenching story ever!
Revisado: 09-23-24
The arc of the story was perfect. The details of the coal delivery man’s home life and his past resonated with me. The counterpoint was the faceted life of the convent girl, a new mother who was being abused- a truly harrowing tale.

Very seductive and tricky w/ a great twist to the plot. Very authentic portrayal of the contemporary art world in Los Angeles!
Revisado: 09-16-24
The Patricia Highsmith like twist was extremely clever. The detailed backdrop of Brentwood, Beverly Hills and the beach in Santa Monica leant the story a unique veritas. I was lucky that the owner of Diesel books recommended this book as I had not heard of the book or the author. The novel was thoroughly enjoyable.

Historia
Ruth is a woman who believes in and despairs of the curative power of love. Her daughter, Eleanor, who is addicted to drugs, has just had a baby, Lily. Ruth adjusts herself in ways large and small to give to Eleanor what she thinks she may need—nourishment, distance, affection—but all her gifts fall short. After someone dies of an overdose in Eleanor's apartment, Ruth hands her daughter an envelope of cash and takes Lily home with her, and Lily, as she grows, proves a compensation for all of Ruth's past defeats and disappointment. Love without fear is a new feeling for her.

Love that the author is the granddaughter of Sigmund Freud and daughter of painter Lucien Freud. The tragedy of her drug addicted daughter is ameliorated any the life altering choice she made to step in and raise her granddaughter. The empathy in the writing triumphs over the tragic scenario.

Historia
An unexpected tragedy at a community pool. A family’s unrelenting expectation of victory. The desire to gain or lose control; to make time speed up or stop; to be frighteningly, undeniably good at something. Each of the eight teenage girl boxers in this blistering debut novel has her own reasons for the sacrifices she has made to come to Reno, Nevada, to compete to be named the best in the country.

Visceral descriptions of boxing, excellent writing. Captures the raw emotion of youth sports, the frailty of the girl’s parental support system. The internal monologues added to the pathos we felt for them.

Historia
Campbell Flynn, art historian, professor, and fêted fixture of the literati, always knew that when his life came crashing down, it would happen in public—yet he never imagined that a single year in London would expose so much. He’s never taken other people half as seriously as they take themselves, which is the first of his mistakes. The second is a new project: opportunistic and precisely calibrated to rake in a fortune.

Historia
The Republic of Venice was the first great economic, cultural, and naval power of the modern Western world. After winning the struggle for ascendency in the late 13th century, the Republic enjoyed centuries of unprecedented glory and built a trading empire which at its apogee reached as far afield as China, Syria, and West Africa. This golden period only drew to an end with the Republic's eventual surrender to Napoleon. The Venetians illuminates the character of the Republic during these illustrious years by shining a light on some of the most celebrated personalities of European history.
