Historia
In the near future in a broken down rural America, Flynne Fisher scrapes a living as a gamer for rich players. One night, working a game set in a futuristic but puzzlingly empty London, she sees a death that's unnervingly vivid. Soon after she gets word that it isn't a game after all—the future she saw is all too real, she's the only witness to a murder and someone from that unreal tomorrow now wants her dead. The story of a young woman caught between two worlds, The Peripheral interweaves two futures to tell a story which gets right to heart of the way we live now.

I just can't read Gibson
Revisado: 01-05-25
Gibson is a genius at ideas, he's very good at writing character, but he just can't deliver a plot. I finished this book and I don't even remember what happened in the middle of it, just the opening, ending, and a few random scenes.
I feel the same about hist other books, so I think it's just me.

great world building, not great story
Revisado: 07-08-24
this might be me, as I had a similar experience with other Gibson books: the author has an incredible imagination and the universe he builds is rich and interesting, but I can hardly remember the plot of all his books.
Something happens at the beginning and something happens at the end but even just after finishing this I can hardly tell what happens in the middle, the story is just not that interesting.

Historia
America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

this is a story which is beautifully written and perfectly narrated. It is hard to go through it because of its deep sadness, but it's worth it.

Historia
The good news is that you have just awakened into Eternal Life. You are going to live forever. Immortality is a reality. A medical miracle? Not exactly. The bad news is that you are a scrap of electronic code. The world you see around you, the you that is seeing it, has been digitized, scanned, and downloaded into a virtual reality program. You are a Copy that knows it is a copy. The good news is that there is a way out.

good book, bad narrator
Revisado: 04-06-24
I don't like to be negative in reviews but the narrator appears to have a single way of intonating sentences, so that he always puts an accent/stress on the last word. This was terrible to listen to for the first few hours until I got used to it.
But the book is great, although it seems to me it has a weak ending.

I didn't love it
Revisado: 03-23-23
the world building in this book is great, but the style (fragmented bits, storylines which are only barely connected, zapping-like segments) is not my cup of tea.
OTOH realizing that this was written in the '60s is mind-blowing, it passed the test of time with flying colors.

Very good, but too short.
Revisado: 04-15-21
I've read the original comic books a couple times, and I went into this with quite low expectations, but this is a really well done audio production, the actors are good, the script is excellent.
At points, especially at the beginning, it is a bit overproduced for my taste (I.e. grandiose ambient music which almost overwhelms the speakers, too many sound effects) but it gets better over time.
The story would be a 5 star one, but the audiobook does not contain all the material in the comics, and not in the sense that it just skips some chapters, it literally only covers about half of the story arch. The introduction states that "Dream must change" but then the narration ends before the change is actually complete. So disappointing.
No World's End, no Death, Destiny, Delirium etc.
The performance would be great, but I cannot get over the treatment of Death.
Apparently she's a 15 yo and to display this fact they gave her... speech impairments? She sounds like a cartoon caricature of a teenager, including a lisp (!).
Maybe this was true of the original character, but, well, it didn't seem like that to me. And this is particularly annoying because other character of the same apparent age can speak just fine.
Still, this is a very enjoyable audiobook.
