I finished Satori by Don Winslow, listened to his acknowledgements towards Shibumi, so hunted down Shibumi by Trevanian. The Eiger and Loo Sanctions were available for the next month free of charge, so WHY NOT?!

Now, I'm watching Clint Eastwood - knowing that Trevanian bagged on the film - in The 1975 production of Eiger Sanction... also soon to be unavailable "leaving Prime in 29 hours!"

All that said, The Loo Sanction has been a suitable sequel to The Eiger Sanction! Probably unnecessary, but from my understanding that Eiger sold fantastically, why not a sequel?! Marketing, commercializm, and taking advantage of markets... all makes sense! Even the free promos involved in my thorough Trevanian rabbit hole... so glad I happened upon Trevanian's world! I'll likely revisit at least a few more times... planning on cracking into Shibumi in the new year.

Something I hate in a story is a solid story, plenty of action, and a weak ending... or even worse, a cliffhanger necessitating another story! This was kinda the opposite. Started kinda weak and flabby, plotwise, but finished STRONG! I'm OK with this. well worth the read.

Bronson, as usual, is brilliant! I've also gained some perspective towards the genre I love, Steam Punk!

The character flaws are palpable, the dangers and obstacles were visceral, and the plot was nuanced! Yet, the story itself is easily accessible and very clear.

I am a Michael J. Sullivan fan! In fact, it's because of Riyria and the sample shorts from those stories that I purchased Audible at all. I've been a voracious consumer ever since.

That said, MJS's story-telling has influenced my own writing... in some ways, it's really messed me up because I strive to have complete stories instead of doing the typical cliffhanger THING that I dislike so much in most fantasy. Another aspect of most fantasy stories is that they tend to be plot-driven and not character-focused. Sullivan's Royce and Hadrian flipped that exquisitely! It was like literature in fantasy settings. It really flipped the trope for me and forced me to give fantasy a chance. But, then there's world-building, isn't there? Sometimes, a story begs background, origins, off-shoots, and quickly the world builds itself and can not be contained in a single book, or series, even!

Esrahaddon was my THIRD favorite character from Riyria... I've been anticipating this SINGLE book for a LONG time. And while I know how his journey ends, I feel like this book - which is both titled after my guy AND seemed to be the capstone of THIS trilogy - focused more on the plot of the greater story. And, to be honest, I'm conflicted about this. On one hand, the character of Elan, and the war between Chaos and Life, is beautifully illustrated. But in the other hand, I feel like my beloved character, Esra d'Haddon, was not given his due.

Perhaps at the heart of the matter is my own realization that I'm only a minor character, if that, in the bigger story about chaos and life. But character-driven stories are the GOOD stuff, and for MY tastes, the bigger picture doesn't matter as much as the GOOD stuff. But, I can simply apply these expectations to my own writing and see if I can meet my own needs. Until then, I remain a MJS fan.

I loved Altered Carbon! The TV series was good too. The second book, and corresponding series, was pretty good too. And THIS book had some real potential. There is a solid, fast-paced, action-packed, and compelling story in there, but whether through the revision process, or unsuccessful editing, there's simply too much in there! There are some good arcs, a great theme, and not-too-predictable twists; however, the turns and and scenes are flabby and have many unnecessary elements. There are also too many "telling" moments that would be so much better if they were "shown."

And who is this narrator?! Takeshi Kovacs is pronounced very specifically in the first two books, yet this new guy pronounced the main character's name completely differently. And the little bathroom echo sound effects were incredibly annoying. But to be fair, the author didn't set him up very well; with better story-telling structure, the myriad of flashbacks and in-construct prose wouldn't seem to need the annoying sound effects.

The story's ending is satisfying, and all the guys stuff is there, but the whole production just has a sloppy or inferior, to the first two books, ultimate product.

Tim Curry was a gem!

This classic tale should be mandatory reading.

As a Dickens fan, this is such a sweet and pleasant tale.

I think I enjoyed the TV series just as much as the book... maybe more. This voice actor is boring; she sounds like a breathey female William Shatner! I hope to remember her name so as to avoid listening to her again. As for the story? Good stuff!

What a great mix of short stories!

As a long time reader of Winslow, and listener of Porter, this is a solid showcasing of both talented artists. Griffith is new to me, but he did well with great material in The Last Ride.

All-around great selection.

I loved Altered Carbon!

This book isn't as good. I'll read the next one, but expectations are lower.
