Historia
America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

It is dark but beautifully written (slight spoiler)
Revisado: 01-03-24
I found this very compelling initially. Couldn’t stop listening for first few hours, which is a rare treat for me. Prose was beautiful and story had me curious and engaged. Was thinking a lot about the Walking Dead tv series as I listened.
But after a few hours I started to tire of the dialogue between father and son. I had compassion for the son’s fear, which sounded warranted. But his unwillingness to do what was needed (search for food) was grating after a while. Dad was mollifying, rather than empowering, in his tone and manner.
I was frustrated they didn’t hunt or plant things, but then understood everything that could be hunted was dead. I would have suffered less frustration if I had realized that sooner. So apologies if that is a spoiler. I kinda wish I’d known. Would have saved some annoyance.
The book is depressing but also compelling. You get to look at the urge to survive and ponder whether squeezing out some time in terrible circumstances is worth it and why or why not. That is a powerful thing to contemplate.
Would you fight for every day in terrible conditions? Let yourself die? Kill yourself? Kill others for what they have that may give you a few more days? Or kill them for what they may take from you if you don’t kill them? These seem to be the questions all the characters have to consider in this story.
There’s a little bit of hope at the end, but a perspective change is required. Have to value the most fundamental things in life to appreciate that sliver of hope.
I’m glad I listened, but I didn’t love it.
Check out Vaster Wilds if you end up liking this. It is a similar story in terms of survival/journey themes. It, too, is highly engaging at first. Circumstances are a bit better in that book (hunting possible), prose excellent. It, too, is still an intense and dark story that makes you ponder life, survival in tough circumstances, whether life or death is better, role of community in survival, fear, etc. Similar themes.

The last chapter is great!
Revisado: 07-18-23
Well, for me this book was all about the first and last chapter. If the entire book had kept up that/those storylines it would have been mind-bendingly epic!!! That are some fascinating spiritual, almost new age perspectives and ideas blended with sci-fi in that last chapter. But several to most of the intervening chapters were just not very interesting to me. I wonder if I need to relisten to the book, looking for links to the last chapter in the middle chapters. Perhaps that would be satisfying at some level. I just barely paid attention to several of the middle parts and was psyched when they were complete. Thus, I prob don’t want to spare the time to relisten on the possibility of mining more enjoyment from this. I’m someone who likes The Alchemist, Celestine Prophecy, Serpent of Light, Siddhartha, Initiation, The Journey Home, Autobiography of a Yogi, and other spiritual books like that. That’s not all I read, of course. I also like contemp literature, suspense, classics, sci-fi, and more. But if I find a fiction book with true spiritual wisdom and some “woah” moments I am excited. I give this 3.5 stars bc those two good chapters were short. If the author does a full book somewhat like the ending, I’d buy it. I also did like the pig chapter, which others have mentioned. That was one diamond in the middle.

I liked it
Revisado: 07-09-23
It is long but good. I listened on 1.45 speed. Better than I thought due to some of the reviews. Glad I gave it a shot. You may think you know what’s up, but then layers keep being woven in to support alternate theories. I thought it was pretty clever. I loved the setting of the story and enjoyed the unfurling of the dark flower that is this mystery.

Historia
Joe Goldberg is ready for a change. Instead of selling books, he’s writing them. And he’s off to a good start. Glenn Shoddy, an acclaimed literary author, recognizes Joe’s genius and invites him to join a tight-knit writing fellowship at Harvard. Finally, Joe will be in a place where talent matters more than pedigree . . . where intellect is the great equalizer and anything is possible. Even happy endings. Or so he thinks, until he meets his already-published, already-distinguished peers, who all seem to be cut from the same elitist cloth.

Ignore the doubters!
Revisado: 05-13-23
I nearly didn’t listen bc of the doubters, but I liked this one as much or even more than the others. Interesting dialogue, references, characters. Joe’s love interest in this book is the quirkiest yet. Give it a try if you liked the others and don’t mind if Joe has evolved a little. He’s human (and so is his creator CK). I did not find him way more narcissistic than previous novels like some reviewers (and I’m a legit psychiatrist irl). The ending (the very last line) was not really what i was hoping for, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Pretty slow and didn’t quite come together for me
Revisado: 01-16-23
I found the inconsistencies in the main character too unrealistic/unbelievable. Thus, the story and ending never gelled for me. Story was pretty slow with most of the last hour seeming somewhat unnecessary. I don’t get the hype on this one, tho the main character does have some quirkily likable qualities. I found myself wondering why the author created such a character. The performance was A+.

Creative and Emotional - Loved
Revisado: 01-02-23
Wow. One of my favorite books I’ve listened to since The Night Circus. I sometimes wish the games and worlds had been described more. I was lost abt what the main characters were making at a few points. But it was an emotionally rich and creative book. I am not a gamer now but was into Nintendo and computer games as a kid. Def check Night Circus and Ready Player One if you like imaginal worlds. I now have to go read about the author because surely she is interesting and intelligent!! Great, great book.

Whew rollercoaster
Revisado: 10-04-22
I have to say it was rough. I am not positive I can recommend. Maybe. In some ways it was beautiful and interesting. But the abuse aspects were tortuous. I hope I don’t have nightmares myself from listening. I started worrying abt the emotional impact of opening myself to such intense content. It was worse that I expected, haunting, re: darkness level.

Loved it so much.
Revisado: 09-27-22
This is my favorite TJR book, and I’ve read all or nearly all, even the early ones. I cannot believe I hesitated bc I was afraid of “too much tennis and intense energy”. It was so emotionally powerful, beautiful to see and feel the characters evolve. Absolutely gripping. I know how to play very basic tennis and would not consider myself a fan, but I def grew in my appreciation of the strategy and skill involved in playing at an elite level. The book far exceeded expectations. Wow. Thank you for that TJR.

May be the best since the first
Revisado: 08-25-22
Loved this one more than the others (except the first) due to all the spiritual content.
The Mother Song is really something.
As always with this series, there’s too much repetition of details that have been mentioned earlier in the same book. I can understand some repetition of details from earlier books, but things mentioned in the same book can be recalled by most people with a normally-functioning working memory.
But if there are no other books that bit of constructive feedback for author and editor is irrelevant, esp since it was given by others before and not really heeded.
So, accepting the repetition is part of enjoying this series. I am still overall very impressed by this series and really enjoyed the journey into the ancient past, pondering what it might have been like. These books gave me much to think about. While reality was surely at least somewhat (to moderately) different from what was presented here, it still was possibly similar. That is fascinating.
