A great take on a princess locked in a tower

This short listen was fun and laugh out loud funny from start to end. The couple of reviews that call it woke or feminist had me scratching my head. A princess battling her way out of the tower (feminist??) or because a fairy doesn't have a gender and the princess assigns one is woke (really??). I would agree with the reviews that there is enough violence/gore that it probably isn't for under 12, but otherwise it's pretty tame stuff.

Put simply, this is a fun, quick listen. You won't regret this purchase.

This short book tries really hard to be funny (too hard). It fails. Giving life to inanimate objects can really add life to a sci-fi/fantasy story... books like Tuesday's at the Castle and A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking are great examples of short, fun books with a living Castle or a Gingerbread man that made me (literally) laugh out loud.

This author animates clothing that thinks it's an animal and the object/animal regularly spouts nonsense that may have amused the author, but in reality are just lame. The narrators were okay, but the harp "music" between chapters really grated on me as well.

I know I'm not the target audience for this book, but I'm not for the previous two books I mentioned or Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower and those were all a joy to listen to without pressing.

Tried to listen to this twice...

Every book in this series may have received the Hugo award, but it's so dull that I have to backtrack because my mind is off thinking about something else. I listen to books while I code and when the programming becomes more interesting than the book, not a good sign.

Based on the editors glowing remarks, I purchased the series on sale -- but I can't even attempt the other two books given this first one. I wish I would have looked at the reader reviews closer, but how could we go wrong when each book get's such critical acclaim? I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Good storyline but VERY heavy handed preaching

This is a interesting young adult story with compelling characters. Narrator is top notch. I do, however, prefer books that give me a taste of the author's morels and principles... many chapters delivered not a taste, but a full meal of it.

The chapters where he reads through the scrolls and was brow-beaten (and thereby we were) about the "meaning" of the scrolls were excruciating for me to listen to. I was transported back to Sunday school where you could not comment or question what was being preached. It was just too heavy handed for me to enjoy and took away from the story. I finished the book, but would be skeptical of anything else this author produces.

Nice addition to the Night Angel Trilogy

If you've read the Night Angel Trilogy, this is a nice addition to round out some of the details hinted at in the books. If you haven't had a chance to read them, they are excellent. I would recommend reading the trilogy before listening to this novela as it has some information that is more enjoyable to discover as you work through the books.

The narration was very good although I'm always aggravated that a new narrator (or the producer) can't take the time to listen to the previous work and pronounce names the same. It's a minor gripe becuase this is a really good narrator.

Stick with Wee Free Men

After enjoying the Wee Free Men series, I had very high hopes for this series. Audio quality is dreadful and it's just not funny. I could only last about two hours before I gave up. Maybe it get's better, but I'm not going to waste any more time on this book.

The book is fun, witty and moves quick. It's a very short listen, but seemed to be the appropriate length to develop the main character and the story. The narration is very good.

Book okay, Narration awful

Total
1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 11-02-08

I have yet to find an audio book done by a Cast (instead of one or two alternating narrators) that I have liked. This audio book changes nothing... instead of different voices for characters, they substitute with bad over-acting. Give me a good narrator with some voice range any day!

While the story line is clever, it moves slow and the frequent song snipets were really annoying to me. Fortunately, the songs are very short. Maybe it would not have been so annoying with the written copy (but... I do remember skipping over most -- well okay, all -- of those songs/poems in the Lord of the Rings series... so maybe not). I also have to admit, I'm the sort of person that has trouble with all of the old movie musicals, so again, if you love them, maybe this book will work for you.

Not as good as Twilight, but still a good read...

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-29-08

While I really enjoyed this book, I cannot agree with those that rate this book in the same league as the Twilight series. The narrator is okay, but I found myself dreading the narration when the main characters were emotional. To be fair, I think the narrator for Twilight (Ilyana Kadushin) was amazing, so it's always harder to enjoy the next book even when the narrator is good.

After reading the Twilight series and this book by Stephanie Meyer, I do see some patterns and hope that her next books will not depend so heavily on the love triangles, which seem to drag out a little too long.

I still highly recommend the book.

Confusing

Revisado: 07-08-08

I forced myself to finish the book, hoping it would get better, but did not enjoy it.

I thought the terminology was not so much childish, but jibberish.

A previous review referred to HP books 1 to 3 being silly, but nowhere in HP does a star show up belching jets...

Very few books do I delete from my library... this is only the second one. Don't waste your credits.
