Historia
For reasons of his own, Stephen Hampton, Lord Summerdale, is determined to learn the truth behind the tangled tale of Helen's ruin. There is nothing he abhors so much as scandal - nothing he prizes so well as discretion - and so he is shocked to find that he cannot help but admire her. But how can she trust a man so steeped in the culture of high society, who conceals so much? And how can he, so devoted to the appearance of propriety, ever love a fallen lady?

Tedious - skipped to the end
Revisado: 11-28-17
I know that often novels are based on misunderstandings and secrets, but this was extreme. Some gorgeous writing underscored just how tedious the secrets and the misunderstanding came to be. Gave up half way through and skipped to the end.
Mind you the narration was very good.

Historia
The third installment of the John Pickett series of humorous Regency mysteries finds Bow Street Runner Pickett in Scotland investigating a woman found unconscious on the beach - a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the local laird's daughter, a girl missing and presumed dead for the last 15 years. Pickett is surprised to discover that the woman was found by none other than Lady Fieldhurst and her three young nephews - and gratified to learn that her ladyship has registered at the seaside inn as Mrs. Julia Pickett.

Regency Mystery - light and upbeat (and clever)
Revisado: 11-20-17
The widowed Lady Fieldhurst and the Bow Street Runner, John Pickett make an unlikely pair in this very class structured society. Lady Fieldhurst is banished to Scotland with her three nephew, but decides to take them on a spontaneous seaside holiday instead of going to their stuffy family home, but to remain incognito Lady Fieldhurst decides they take the family name of Pickett. Then a mystery ensues and the Bow Street Runners are needed ...
The style reminded me of the writing of Georgette Heyer (for example, sense of time was captured with the oh so deft passing references to fashion, and references to social conditions both above and below stairs in the local manor house).
I had not read the first two books and found it easy to catch up on the tangled relationships in the book. While initially frustrated with Lady Fieldhurst's highhanded (slightly unthinking) actions, and John Pickett's lack of self assertion, by the end of the audio I was on tenderhooks to find out what happens next to them. I will continue to buy this series!

Historia
When the eligible Mr. Allison is to come to Fenton Manor to woo Honoria, there is a problem. She doesn't remember what he looked like. Crippled by her timidity, she hardly looked at him when they'd met during her first London season. But he had spoken to her father, determined to ask her for her hand. Her siblings, Serena and Benedict, find this highly amusing, but after Honoria overhears a conversation between her parents about their finances, she realises she must marry Mr. Allison.

Regency Romance - with plenty of twists & humour
Revisado: 11-20-17
Slow and clever plot development, a few sub plots, and humour that in in one part (chapter 25) was extraordinarily funny.
The plot starts with a couple of misunderstandings, but an elegent enough reason for no one to communicate their concerns, to get the novel going. I really enjoyed the listen and even towards the end I could not see how the main characters were going to acheive their HEA with only three chapters left.
If you liked Clarrissa and the Poor Relations, or if you like Regencies romances with humor and wit, you will not be disappointed at all with this novel. Narrator was very good.

Charming Protagonist, Regency murder mystery
Revisado: 11-08-17
Aunt Dido is in her late 30s,who while keeping company of a neice that has been jilted the day after her engagement, is also attempting to discover the murderer of a unknown female found in the grounds of their host, a wealthy landowner.
Side plots (non of them instrusive, just adding the enjoyment of the novel) involve the tangled courtships of other guests in the household, plus a few red herrings along the way.
Dido is undoubtly clever but in some of the ways of the world excedingly (and amsuingly) naive, but that is in keeping with the period. Talking of which, the period detail is skillfully woven into the fabric of the novel. I enjoyed the lively letters to her sister Eliza to relay information or to give a quick recap.
The narrator can be occasionally noisy - bear with her as she does improve (I wish they had her reread the first couple of chapters though), and I found her narration on the whole quite charming.
Hoping to find more of Anna Dean's novels narrated in the near future.

Fabulous Fantasy Fluff
Revisado: 08-17-17
It is not really science fiction, and definitely not the usual Brin novel. It is a fun feel good story, and has held up well (it is over 30 yrs old).
But the narration speed is wrong, I know Nuel is a laid back guy, but the narration is too slow (he was in danger of sounding comotose instead of relaxed). I fixed it by playing at 1.25 speed, and then it was totally fine.
Enjoy

So much heft for a short novel. Hugely Satisfying
Revisado: 08-13-17
I have never read anything by this author before, and was completely enchanted away by the concepts, or rather the exploration of them. This short novel had so much packed into it.
Shay is a fascinating character, exploring the conceits of their captors, attempting to create a complete forgery at the same time as developing escape scenarios. Hugely satisfying, well narrated novel.

Georgian Gem of a Romance, Narrator is EXCELLENT
Revisado: 08-04-16
Firstly - I do urge you to click on the sample section and just listen to the dulcet tones of the narrator. His voice is gorgeous.
The novel itself is a sweet story, shades of Georgette Heyer but not quite as droll (but there are moments of humour, such as that Parrot, loved his interjections), but most definitely reminiscent of Patricia Veryan. The hero is quite perfit (perfect) and this is ably assisted by the narration.
If you want a gentle, well written, charming historical, this comes highly recommended. I cannot wait for my next credit so I can download the next in this trilogy of related novels.

Historia
The honourable Christopher Fancot, on leave from the Diplomatic Service in the summer of 1817, is startled to find his entrancing but incorrigibly extravagant mother on the brink of financial and social ruin - and more than alarmed that his identical twin, Evelyn, Earl of Denville, has disappeared without trace. Christopher, or Kit, the respectable brother, is forced into an outrageous masquerade by his wayward family's tangled affairs. But in the face of Evelyn's continued absence, even Kit's ingenuity is stretched to the limit.

Delightful Regency Identity Swap
Revisado: 07-16-16
Not my favourite Georgette Heyer Novel, but Phyllida Nash and her charming narration (oh she so brings out the sparkle of Lady Danville) makes this one of my favourite audios.
Unusual for a Heyer to be so strongly written in the male point of view, but Kit Fancot is an honourable, stylish witty character. This is not an action filled story, but the character development and relationships, and the wonderful writing is a pure joy.
If you enjoy a well written tale with amusing dialogue and a gallery of supporting characters, with fun mixed with decorum - and where the author totally understands the period with many incidental details - this is definitely for you.

English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Long Elegant Fantasy
Revisado: 07-27-15
Years ago I tried (and failed) to read this as a book, but found the prose (artfully in keeping with the period) too slow and it failed to grip my interest.
But this audio, which stopped me from trying to read ahead, gave me the time to appreciate the well-written, intelligent historical fantasy with its masterful sense of time and place. It is a book to savour, not gallop through. Even the footnotes worked. The novel's subtle humour is gentle and sometimes wry.
Highly recommend it

Minerva marks the delightful debut of The Six Sisters, a family saga in six volumes that will recount the romantic adventures of the six marriageable daughters of a country vicar, the Reverend Charles Armitage, in Regency England. The eldest, Minerva, is enchantingly beautiful - but a prude. She lives in the country looking after her siblings while her mother reclines on a chaise longue happily inventing new malaises.

Charmless story. No Likeable Characters
Revisado: 07-17-13
I would normally thoroughly delight in the charms of a Marion Chesney/MC Beaton Regency story, but I was unable to finish this one.
Minerva was a smug prude, her father selfish, her mother a hypochondriac - her siblings were self absorbed, shallow etc.
Not as fun as her other series.
