Historia
Charlotte Bellows wrote The Definition of Beautiful between the ages of 15 and 17, in the wake of lockdown and in recovery from anorexia. In the tradition of Sylvia Plath in The Bell Jar and Françoise Sagan in Bonjour Tristesse, Bellows writes with deceptively straightforward urgency, pushing through society's constraints on the bodies and minds of girls and women to offer a story both achingly familiar and devastatingly new.

Redundant ,boring and puerile, but maybe a good book for adolescents who are struggling with eating disorders.

He instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history - culpable regardless of her intentions. Narration a disappointment
Revisado: 08-17-22
Narration brings this otherwise excellent Frazier book down a disappointing degree. Clearly delivered and well-articulated, it is understandable, but that’s the best that can be said of it.

What did Annie Dillard think of this narrator?
Revisado: 11-13-20
Annie Dillard, certainly one of America's uncontested BEST authors, is always remarkable reading. Likewise the audio versions: Her An American Childhood is phenomenal, as is The Mayfield's. So I was very excited to purchase The Abundance audiobook...
Unfortunately, the narration is just so difficult for me to listen to that I couldn't get through it! So I bought the book to read, instead, and of course it as excellent as one would expect from Annie Dillard's pen.
Generally I've been amazed at the quality of narration with the selections on Audible!
Maybe it was just me, or the contrast with the (excellent!) naration for the previous books, but I was so disappointed with this selection! I returned to it numerous times, trying to get past the aggravating narration, but wasn't able to even finish the first chapter! (Well, I listen as I fall asleep at night, so I might have "heard" more,, but I certainly didn't LISTEN to it!) (ZZzzzzz...)
I'd like to return it, but I've had it in my library for a long time, thinking that I should be able to get past the narration, that maybe in a different setting or a different mood it would strike me differently.
Nope; never happened.
Truly disappointed on this, and surprised to be so!

He's looking forward to becoming a fixture in the community, until an unexpected romantic reversal gives him second thoughts. Will he truly be happy tending to routine coughs and colds for the rest of his career? After all, even when a more challenging case comes along, like a rare tropical disease, all he can do is pass it on to a qualified specialist or big-city hospital.

Wish I had a better review to offer...
Revisado: 11-04-20
...but the plot is just so puerile and predictable!
The narrator is a favorite, and if you missed him for Sara Baum’s “Spill Simmer Falter Wither” you’re in for a treat! But the material in this case doesn’t work for me...too bad.

In 1968, Robert Pirsig and his son, Chris, made the cross-country motorcycle trip that was the basis for Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, a book that has inspired generations with its searching personal and philosophical narrative. After rereading the book at the onset of middle age, reporter Mark Richardson tuned up his old Suzuki dirt bike and became a "Pirsig Pilgrim".

Don’t bother
Revisado: 10-02-20
The only writing in this work of any merit are the direct quotes from Pirsig. The rest reads like a puerile imitation.
I accidentally touched the link for this when trying to order the original, but thought it might be worth a listen since it landed in my library.
It wasn’t.
The narrator deserves a higher score, but couldn’t rise beyond the confines of the script...

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Revisado: 09-18-20
Thanks so much to JD Vance for this 5 stars Audiobook. It’s an important offering for those of us who haven’t much exposure to the world he shares: The cultural mores, family values and political stance of the greater Appalachia demographic as shared through the author’s very credible narrative were very valuable.
Excellent on so many levels!

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-24-18
I’d hoped the author’s writing would be more worthy of the Brontë sisters. Instead I found it pedestrian and stilted. The only well-written parts are those that are taken directly from the Brontës sisters books, diaries or letters. The concept was good, and probably a valiant effort on the part of the author, but I’d I did advise skipping this one...
