Historia
Cameron Winter was born with the ability to recreate detailed crime scenes in his imagination and dissect the motives and encounters that produced them. And after reading a puzzling news story about a wealthy family killed in a small town in the Chicago suburbs, he can't resist the chance to apply this deductive power in the pursuit of justice for the victims. Three members of the family, along with their live-in nanny, were pulled from their burning mansion, already dead from gunshot wounds. The only survivor is a young boy whose memory of the event raises more questions than answers.

Everything but the main plot line is good. Otherwise the mystery solution is not satisfying.

Historia
In the last and most complex of the Barsetshire novels, many of Trollope's best-loved characters appear, but the mood of the novel is darker and more uneasy than in earlier volumes. At the heart of the novel is the penniless Reverend Josiah Crawley, first encountered in Framley Parsonage, who in the opening of the book is accused of theft, creating a public scandal that threatens to tear the community apart.

A great end to a fine series
Revisado: 10-22-23
With tears, we leave a place Trollope has for us, as he says he has for himself, made real. Timothy West’s narration is lovely. The portrait of the Bishop is especially real.

Best of the first five

Complex. I wish I had a series character map, especially since married women get new names and residences. A novel of ambition and coming of manhood.

Historia
It’s 1852 and Margaret Lennox, a young widow, attempts to escape the shadows of her past by taking a position as governess to an only child, Louis, at an isolated country house in the west of England. But Margaret soon starts to feel that something isn’t quite right. There are strange figures in the dark, tensions between servants, and an abandoned east wing. Even stranger is the local gossip surrounding Mrs. Eversham, Louis’s widowed mother, who is deeply distrusted in the village.

Great mystery, great characters
Revisado: 09-01-23
I was worried when the story has a sick boy and the author loves Dombey. But that would have been a twist too far. The mystery was well worked out and I got hooked. Just one flaw: whist is not a two person game.

Historia
In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched sci fi into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution - or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging.

Historia
George Walther Stott was the richest and most hated man in Stottington, and his three children grew up to be almost as hated as he was. As he took his final breath, George Walther died of natural causes with a smile on his face. For even though he was passing on, he would have the last laugh. His children, those appalling mumblecrusting jizzbags who seeped forth from his former wife's formerly perfect vagina, would only inherit his massive wealth on one condition. That they solve his murder.

Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

Wonderful writing wonderfully read
Revisado: 04-10-23
I have begun reading Trollope late in life after a devotion to Dickens, Collins, and Austen. Once a professor came to give a talk at the Dickens Universe about Trollope and the Universe organizers learned that he was going to ask the audience for a show of hands of those who had read all 46 of Trollope’s novels. When he did ask, the forewarned audience all raised their hands. Now I have only 40 to go. Every chapter had so many lines I wanted to remember.

Historia
The man on the moon was dead. They called him Charlie. He had big eyes, abundant body hair, and fairly long nostrils. His skeletal body was found clad in a bright red spacesuit, hidden in a rocky grave. They didn’t know who he was, how he got there, or what had killed him. All they knew was that his corpse was 50 thousand years old - and that meant this man had somehow lived long before he ever could have existed.

Show them don’t tell them
Revisado: 09-15-22
The writing is execrable. It is 99% exposition. The dialog is all exposition. No character development. No real plot, no action, no tension. No real voice or emotion except the narrative voice. It is not the fault of the narrator, it is the fault of the editor / publisher.

Some of the greatest prose you will ever hear
Revisado: 05-08-22
At its heart a mystery, this novel has engaging characters, a shifting timeline and point of view that keeps you engaged. But the words, the words, almost every few sentences you feel you should stop to copy them to keep. A profound statement against racism, that would get anyone trying to teach it pilloried and fired by the pseudo-intellectual woke mob. The book well earns its place in the top 100 modern novels.
