Historia
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

I rarely bail before finishing books, but the protagonist was so unlikable and annoying that I just couldn’t take any more.

Brief survey; needs sound editing
Revisado: 11-15-24
This was an entertaining, if very superficial, skip through Scottish history. If you are going to read only one Scottish history, I recommend selecting something else.
Part of the first couple of chapters seemed to have missed basic sound editing as the narrator repeated parts and corrected pronunciation of some words. The narrator had a pleasant voice, but his accent and occasional odd pronunciation made him a surprising choice for a book about Scotland.

Historia
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Inspiring coverage of dark historical events
Revisado: 08-22-24
I have long been interested in African history, but had never studied the Belgian colonial period in this depth. I expected, and found, heart-rending descriptions of tragic events, incredible cruelty and amazing perfidy. I was surprised, however, by many of the details of Leopold’s role and the global movement that arose to combat the abuses in the “free state.” The story was gripping and I didn’t want to stop reading. The narration was grating at first, but it was fine one I slowed the speed just a little. Highly recommend!

This was a fascinating, informative, and delightful listen. It has prompted me to think differently about the English language and dictionaries in general. Winchester is a wonderful storyteller and narrator. Appropriate and enjoyable music bookended each chapter and the book as a whole. I’m actually quite depressed to be finished.

Historia
In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

I’m a huge Jodi Taylor fan, but with previous book, I was afraid the time police series was running out of steam. Happily, my fears were unfounded. Great story—it was delightful from start to finish. Zara Ramm’s narration remains stellar. Highly recommend.

Historia
It is an age when Valdemar is yet unfounded, its organization of Heralds yet unformed, and magic is still a wild and uncontrolled force. Skandranon Rashkae is perhaps the finest specimen of his race, with gleaming ebony feathers, a majestic wingspan, keen magesight, and sharp intelligence. Courageous, bold, and crafty, Skan is everything a gryphon should be. He is the fulfillment of everything that the Mage of Silence, the human sorcerer called Urtho, intended to achieve when he created these magical beings to be his champions, the defenders of his realm.

Dull. Just really dull
Revisado: 05-28-24
Obviously a lot of people like these books, but this first one didn’t do it for me. The narrator was good, but couldn’t save the material. There was too much repetitive internal monologue by the main characters. Unfortunately, none of it ever made me care about any of them. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did. I can’t imagine why I would put myself through the rest of the series.

What’s the female characters name???
- De sandieclaus en 10-08-20
I bailed half way through!
Revisado: 03-16-24
Only very rarely do I fail to finish a book. I wish I had paid more attention to the negative reviews on this one. The repeated stupidity of the main character just killed it for me. If the entire plot hinges on absurdly bad decisions repeated over and over, I just get disgusted with the characters. The male narrator was fine. I assume that female narrator was young: she sounded just the same voicing a child and an adult. In some wordy passages, it sounded like she was reading the text for the first time; if so, it would help explain her difficulty pronouncing words correctly.

I recall reading about these fairy photos as a child. I enjoyed this story written around real events and characters. The narrator was superb, with a good range of voices and accents a uniformly soothing tone.
