Good Story
Revisado: 11-18-23
Good story. Good series. Unfortunately, I do not enjoy these dramatized adaptations. I want the story, not a bunch of distracting and irrelevant background noise.

Horribly Disappointed
Revisado: 03-13-23
I have been a fan of this series for years. The books are usually a lot of gun talk, a little humor, and a lot of interactions within the team and family that makes them all pretty real to me. I felt the previous book might have been showing a few cracks in the façade, but surely, I thought, things will look back up. Boy, was I ever wrong. This book was such an incredible disappointment. Think monster hunting women's fiction. I'm a woman and still I was ready to lose my lunch over the numerous repetitions of "but I must find my baby" or something similar. Okay. I got it. But once again it felt as if the text was being padded for length. Additionally, I listened to the audio version with a narrator who made Julie sound about 20 (and that's stretching it) and which contained numerous incorrect words that may or may not have been errors in the text. Had I been less annoyed overall, I might have given that a pass; as it is, I have to ask "Doesn't anybody ever proof this stuff??!!" The only thing that made it worthwhile slogging through to the end was the presence of a pint-size shoggoth.

Historia
On a planet where life is cheap, in a city built on corruption, very few things are considered holy. The Landing Site is one of them. The remains of the century-old habitat pod—which delivered the colonists to the only barely habitable place on the cruel world of Croatoan—has become a monument to the hardscrabble people who somehow survived the unsurvivable. So when blood is shed on that sacred ground, it’s seen as an attack against the entire colony.

Excellent
Revisado: 02-12-23
The combination of Larry Correia and Oliver Wyman is always magic. Even though the stories are frequently outside my normally preferred genres, I still cannot stop listening. Mind you, in this case, you might find Monster Hunter characters hanging about...but that's a hazard of listening to too many books too many times.

Historia
My name is Nate Temple, and I’m secretly a wizard. I ride a foul-mouthed unicorn, I drink with Achilles, and I’m pals with the Four Horsemen. I’ve even cow-tipped the Minotaur. I understand the theory of following the rules...I’m just not very good at the application. Because rules were meant to be broken, and St. Louis has a bit of a supernatural infestation these days. Someone should probably be keeping an eye on these things -and probably an eye on me, too. Before I blow up another building...or three.

Bad Narration
Revisado: 07-23-22
What everyone has said about the narrator is absolutely true. I want to listen to these books, so I’m adjusting the speed from funereal to something a bit more lively and will soldier on. Slowly. Got a headache a few chapters in.

Historia
Myra Reed’s life is going great. Being a cop is great. Guarding the library of arcane secrets is great. Even dealing with the monsters and gods vacationing in the little beach town of Ordinary, Oregon is great. Then the demon, Bathin, strolls into town and steals Myra’s sister’s soul. So much for great. Luckily, Myra has a plan to evict the demon and save her sister’s soul. Step one: shut down the portals to hell popping up in town. Step two: get rid of the pink know-it-all unicorn. Step three: don’t die while teaching Death how to be a cop.

Ordinary Magic is a Wonderful Series
Revisado: 10-22-20
It is rare for me to decide to purchase audio versions of ebooks that I own...only one format is my policy. Ordinary Magic ... I decided a short time ago that I wanted to have the audio as well. The whole Whispersync thing is cool. Kristine Hvam is a rocking narrator. I sped through the first three in the series happily. Then fast-forward to my next listen-through. I didn't have this title in my library. It is a very recent publication. I am not fond of full-cast productions. They just do not really work for me; they tend to feel overdone. But ... whatever. It's not Ms. Hvam, but better than nothing. But is it an unabridged version of the book? I can't tell. It is only half the length of the previous books. It never says either way...abridged or unabridged. Also, it's not Whispersync, so the switching between listening and reading is off the table. For me, then, this rendition of Dime A Demon is overall a 3-star rating. Love the book; have issues with the audio production.

Isabella “Izzy” Sage spent her formative years on Belle Isle in Detroit, playing next to the gate that separates the living from the dead as her parents drew a paycheck from the grim reaper council. Then the impossible happened, tragedy struck, and Izzy found herself an orphan. Her grandfather took her away and raised her among the Bruja in New Orleans, although her heart always longed to return to the gate...which felt so much like a part of her. Now, as an adult, Izzy has worked her way up to gatekeeper status, and she’s back in the place her childhood ended.

Narrator Killed it For Me
Revisado: 10-07-20
The books are good. Unfortunately, the voices used by this narrator for the Grimlocks make them all seem like idiotic teenagers. I don't know if my aversion to this narration is simply because I am used to the sound of the Grimlocks in their own series, but I don't think that is entirely the case. This narrator is simply not capable of one male voice let alone the entire cast of Grimlock brothers and other characters. I won't return it, because I was pretty much aware in advance that the narrator was a problem (and bought the book anyway ... that's on me); there's no way, however, that I'll invest in the rest of the series on Audible, which makes me sad

Awful Narration
Revisado: 09-08-20
I have read and enjoyed this series, but I did not realize that I had never listened to this series. Therefore, I was astonished to find that the narration was so poor. After about a chapter, I realized that there was no way I could listen to the end. I intend to return this title as soon as possible

A plucky farm boy will find more than he's bargained for on his quest to awaken the sleeping princess in her cursed tower. First there's the Dark Lord, who wishes for the boy's untimely death...and also very fine cheese. Then there's a bard without a song in her heart but with a very adorable and fuzzy tail, an assassin who fears not the night but is terrified of chickens, and a mighty fighter more frightened of her sword than of her chain-mail bikini. This journey will lead to sinister umlauts, a trash-talking goat, and the Dread Necromancer Steve....

The authors clearly enjoy a good bout of wordplay; I TOO enjoy wordplay. The authors clearly appreciate alliteration; I TOO appreciate alliteration. The authors were following the path to a classic Tolkien epic journey and had a blast doing it. The story itself wasn't too deep, but the character-building was extraordinary. However, for the Audible version, it is difficult to review the story. I have a feeling that the story was written merely as an exercise to let Luke Daniels loose to do .... his .... thing. His performance was utterly amazing.

Hard Lessons
Revisado: 03-10-19
I love this series. This particular book, however, was a lot about learning hard truths. The Others find that they are not as invincible as they imagined. The Humans learn that no matter how hard they try to earn their place in their world, there is always some big schmuck to come along and wreck everything. Sometimes the good guys don't win. Big losses; hard lessons. Some people are suggesting that the characters did not behave intelligently or consistently. I'm usually prone to finding that annoying, but I was totally enthralled throughout this listen so either I don't concur or I just didn't pick up on it. I thought that characters might not have made the best decisions, but most of us do not always make smart decisions.

Revisado: 01-21-19
This series is just the sort of light, frivolous read I sometimes crave. No angst; no drawn-out inter-personal tension; no "will they or won't they". Just a little mystery. A bunch of interesting characters and a satisfactory conclusion. The only negative I could really come up with is that the narrator has one elderly lady voice, so I feel a certain subconscious confusion with characters from other series I've listened to him narrate. On the whole, though, he does a surprisingly good job.
