Historia
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Sobering and Ready for the Struggle
Revisado: 06-23-20
This is both a call in and a call out. A challenge to the allies who show up to get a stamp on their protest punch card and the wavering men who take their pan out on Black Women and women of color. It identifies clear areas that feminism has overlooked and details how for a truly inclusive platform, the scope must be expanded to include the issues, pains, and worries of women who are marginalized.

I cried over and over
Revisado: 02-25-20
Some books keep you because of the plot. Some keep you because of the characters. Sometimes a book comes along that can hold you so firmly because of the raw emotions it evokes. Lin Manuel, the voice of a generation, brings Ari and Dante to life. I’ve never heard a story so charming, hauntingly beautiful, and yet simple.

How the Bible Actually Works makes clear that there is no one right way to read or listen to the Bible. Moving us beyond the damaging idea that “being right” is the most important measure of faith, Enns’ freeing approach to Bible study helps us to instead focus on pursuing enlightenment and building our relationship with God - which is exactly what the Bible was designed to do.

A Deeply Spiritual and Philosophical Read
Revisado: 02-16-20
How do we move closer to understanding what our faith calls us to do? How do we live in this world with the wisdom from the Bible? This book helps us imagine the context surrounding the sacred text and figure out how we are meant to apply it to our lives. A challenge to the literal interpretations of the bible and those who cherry-pick quotes from the bible to suit their purposes, this book is a practice in deep thought, historical context, and the whole purpose of the great book, wisdom.

Historia
Built in the 1940s atop an infamous Italian slum, Cabrini-Green grew to 23 towers and a population of 20,000 - all of it packed onto just 70 acres a few blocks from Chicago's ritzy Gold Coast. Cabrini-Green became synonymous with crime, squalor, and the failure of government. For the many who lived there, it was also a much-needed resource - it was home. By 2011, every high-rise had been razed, the island of black poverty engulfed by the white affluence around it, the families dispersed.

How do you fight the wind?
Revisado: 02-04-20
As a lifelong Chicagoan, I grew up afraid of different parts of my city. The violence in my neighborhood and others seemed inevitable and undeniable. Through it all Cabrini Green and the other housing projects remained ghoulish reminders not of individual behavior, but of collective neglect and destabilization by the government. This book does a remarkable job exploring the causes for the crumbling of public housing and the lifelong effects it had. When it comes to the failures of some individuals to overcome Cabrini, how could you fight the wind? How can you fight something bigger than you that is omnipresent.

Historia
In Everthing Is F*cked, Mark Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive.

Philosophy not just self help
Revisado: 01-15-20
I’ve always enjoyed his books because where some writers give you a quick pep talk and minor tweak to your life, he delves into history and two thought. Hope is an interesting concept to tackle. Agency and religion as well, but he does so masterfully. Start of 2020 reading a book that sits with you.

beautiful story, even if some details don't add up
Revisado: 11-04-19
This book has been cited for some historical inaccuracies. During the listen, you can't help but slip out and ponder a few odds and ends;however, the narrator has the voice of a man who has had to hold it all together. The story never ceases to be moving and clear. Definitely worth a listen and then follow up research.
