Historia
When Mackenzie wakes up with a severed crow's head in her hands, she panics. Only moments earlier she had been fending off masses of birds in a snow-covered forest. In bed, when she blinks, the head disappears. Night after night, Mackenzie’s dreams return her to a memory from before her sister Sabrina’s untimely death: a weekend at the family’s lakefront campsite, long obscured by a fog of guilt.

Slow burn. Pacing wasn't for me.
Revisado: 07-06-24
Let me say, my review should not reflect on the quality of the book. You may love it. I think the way non-binary is represented was fantastic. Where I had the hardest time was the pacing. My mind kept wandering during the lulls between horror elements. If you like a good family drama, this is for you - there is a lot of good here for that genre.

Historia
Jonathan Martin Delaware Deseronto is a six-foot-five serial killer with a problem. He's stuck out on I-476 in a heavy November rainstorm with two flat tires and the dead bodies of a cop and a coed named Marissa Madison in his trunk. Desperate to get off the highway, he drives his car on its back rims towards exit six. The car stalls on the ramp, and Deseronto uses the last of its momentum to plunge over the crest of a steep slope and crash into a length of concrete pipe below.

Great premise that loses you in the middle, but comes back hard
Revisado: 06-09-24
I think that the biggest pitfall this had was that a bulk of the middle feels like it completely derails the story, and while there is some payoff, the effect would have been the same without several chapters being condensed or cut completely. The saving grace of this one is that in the last 1/3, it gets back on track and managed to keep my interest the rest of the way. All in all for me it was a 2.5, and a whole point of that is due to the last act.

Kept me curious for a bit.
Revisado: 06-05-24
Reading the bulk of this was like watching a train wreck. You're not excited about it, but somehow can't look away. The ending fell flat for me, but the epilogue improved that slightly.

A Tale of Bleak Redemption
Revisado: 01-07-24
The Black Farm is a trauma fueled, bleak journey through the worst nightmares I can imagine. The way Elias describes this new world, it is as awe inspiring as it is devastating. The Black Farm is a master class on using description to transport the reader to a new world - even if that world is absolutely terrifying and depraved. The narrative performance brought life to Nick, Jess, and the cast of characters that populate the Farm.
Will you Feed the Pig, or will you doom yourself to forever roam The Black Farm.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 09-09-23
The narration of this one certainly elevated it for me - which is a good thing because I don't think I would have finished this otherwise. While the multi-timeline storytelling helps bring our two main characters stories together, I felt like it suffered from some pacing issues. Right when things started to ramp up in the present, we'd jump back into the past and that train of tension would just release.
The final act delivers in a way that the first two did not, in that regard. I found the ending, while predictable, to bring the story home in a satisfying way. It just took too long to get there.

When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. Keeping her sane. Instead, she got Em. Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition.

Not at all what I expected.
Revisado: 08-01-23
While the narration was well done, I had a hard time enjoying this one. The pace dragged in several places and the plot points became repetitive by the end. My buddy loved it though, so I think it depends on what you're into.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this found footage style horror story. The only thing I wish was different is that I wanted more at the end. What happens with Reyes?! Does Andie have a final confrontation with her? I'd love to see that.

Revisado: 01-16-20
The narrative performance heightened the energy of this book - I couldn't stop until I was done. It truly is a book that plays on your assumptions and turns them on you. In the end, I'm still not sure what to believe, and that is powerful story telling.
