Historia
Oxford, 1836. The city of dreaming spires. It is the centre of all knowledge and progress in the world. And at its centre is Babel, the Royal Institute of Translation. The tower from which all the power of the Empire flows. Orphaned in Canton and brought to England by a mysterious guardian, Babel seemed like paradise to Robin Swift. Until it became a prison. But can a student stand against an empire?

Simply brilliant!

Honestly, I’m still trying to process this book. So, this short review is post-listening emotions. Forgive me, I’m still raw.
Kuang masterfully paints a portrait of language, power and revolution in a fictionalized version of Oxford University, that grips the reader from chapter one and leaves their hearts asunder by the close of the epilogue. In this, we set on a journey through Robin’s eyes and close it through those of Victoire’s and in between one is made to care, love, empathize, hate and understand the other dominant voices in this story. This is true storytelling. The kind yearned but rarely given. Kuang tells a story that any marginalized voice can listen to and relate with because she does what so few authors can do: she tells stories relatable to a large audience. An audience that the very classics quoted within, fail to reach. This book is marvelous. This book is intelligent, masterfully written. This book is devastating! I will be purchasing a copy because I need to relive all of this with pencil, ruler and highlighter in hand.
I would love to say that this book had wide appeal, but it may bore those who care not for etymology or infuriate others who fail to see perspectives other than their own. Therefore, I’d recommend this to the reader who is marginalized by things they can’t change. This book, is for us. You and I.

Historia
In Broad Daylight tells the story of the killing of Ken Rex McElroy on the main street of Skidmore, Missouri, in July 1981. McElroy, an illiterate hog farmer, had terrorized all of northwest Missouri for over 20 years, until the town, and even law enforcement, was terrified of him. McElroy was shot as he sat in his truck in front of the tavern. Over 45 men witnessed the shooting. Despite two eyewitness accounts and three grand jury investigations, no one has been prosecuted for the crime.

A listen that'll make your blood boil

I'm not ashamed to say that "Buzzfeed Unsolved" brought me here. By the end of Ryan and Shane's discussion of this case, I was most intrigued. I had wondered, "[H]ow bad could this Ken guy have been for an entire town to keep mum about his killer(s)?"
This book answered that and many other questions.
What most impressed me about the author's ability to write was how he didn't paint Ken as this inherently rotten human being, but he made him seem quite affable. Ken had had many friends and apart from his violent tendencies, he was able to attract and court women. His children appeared to love him dearly.
Inspite of this, Ken did bad things. A lot of terrible things. And this book details them with such care, that one is easily able to chart the beginning of the end for him. Moreso than Ken's horrid ways, it was the lack of legal protection that was frustrating. Added to this, was Skidmore's general behaviour towards Ken's victims. Both of these things bolstered Ken in his belief that he was "bulletproof", a god among men. Thus, to a large extent, one wonders whether Skidmore didn't in fact birth and raise its own demon only to suffer the consequences of slaying it. That question is left for the reader to answer.
I fully recommend this book to all True Crime lovers, like myself.

A cute, quick listen.

This was a fun story.
It was easy to follow and the plot was simple. I enjoyed the switch between the male and female voice actors. That gave this short little story the perfect variety to keep the listener engaged.
Although there were moments I was frustrated with the main female character, it was an expected annoyance in light of her background. For thorough enjoyment, the listener should accept that this is a light and fluffy story without the complications of a full-length romance book.
If one simply wants a little dash of romance while washing the dishes or going for a jog, I would recommend this title.

An Interesting Listen
Revisado: 06-18-21
The one thing that this story kept consistent was ensuring that the reader knew that Steve was an unlikeable character. That was very well done on the part of the writer.
There were, however, two major critiques that I had -
1) The au pair is made to sound like some dumb unknowing child. Verena Dierkes was 19, not 12. She was old enough to travel, from Germany to the US, get employed as a full-time babysitter and go clubbing with her friends. I didn't like how the writer tried to paint Verena as some innocent little girl. She was a grown woman and ultimately, a mistress and a liar. That speaks a lot to her character. To say that she was "in love" and was "manipulated" by a man she had literally no loyalty to is ridiculous.
2) The second critique goes more to how the investigators went about executing their duties. I was grossly irritated at how laissez-faire the police were in their interactions with Steve. The cracking of jokes and making light of such a tragedy with that sociopath rubbed me up the wrong way. The commentary of what the detectives were thinking at the time doesn't alleviate that feeling, but seems like a forced ex post facto inclusion to justify their laughing and amiable attitudes during questioning and interrogations.
Apart from this, the story was well-done. At times, I did get slightly annoyed at the different tangents and off-shoot stories being told. But, overall, this made for good listening.
