Historia
In the village of Putney in 1647 a radical idea was born out of radical times. England had just endured five years of civil war. The king was under house arrest, and Parliament was clueless about the next steps. They certainly didn’t anticipate demands from sections of the army and their civilian supporters calling for democracy, religious tolerance, and equality under the law. Whilst it’s unimaginable for French schools to omit the 1789 Revolution or for American high schools to skip the Wars of Independence, here in the United Kingdom the Putney Debates are largely forgotten but arguably...

Historia
Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

Why I Felt Uncertain About Today’s World
Revisado: 10-15-24
This book put into words what I have been feeling. Someone else out there gets it. I also have a new view on activism and the way people are silenced. And more importantly, why I again feel I need to fight for my rights as a XX woman. Thank you.

Historia
Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.

Justifies My Seven Year Old Self
Revisado: 09-24-24
When I was seven years old I was permanently kicked out of Sunday School. Not because of my actions. Because of my thoughts. I called God a sinner. I had good reason to do so. I refused to back down.
Richard Dawkins outlines everything I felt instinctually as a child. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, my imaginary pony, Trudy, and God, none of them exist and adults made them up. Except for the pony. He justifies my annoyance with adults who insisted I “believe.” That it is abuse to insist on baby baptisms and Sunday Schools. That we atheists should follow the lead of the LGBTQ community, be brave, and come out of our cupboards and closets. It’s ok to be A.

Historia
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

This is a tale that could happen to any of us. It’s an “every man” tale. A good Americana story of ideals.

Historia
Ida Pederson was an executive at ‘Nyberg Shoreline’ when she was sent to the small Northern Irish village of Port Kriel to diffuse tensions between the company and the local community. When an unexploded bomb was identified on the seabed near Nyberg’s windfarm, Ida sent a local crew of eight men to investigate. That night, only two men returned home, barely alive and unable to speak of what had happened out at sea.

Historia
Her Korean name was Ah-Chim-Hai, meaning Flame-of-the-Morning. Af our-year-old chestnut-colored Mongolian racehorse with a white blaze down her face and three white stockings, she once amazed the crowds in Seoul with her remarkable speed. But the star racer was soon sold to an American marine and trained to carry heavy loads of artillery shells up and down steep hills under a barrage of bullets and bombs. The marines renamed her Reckless. Reckless soon proved fearless under fire, boldly trekking alone through the fiery gauntlet, exposed to explosions and shrapnel.

Part What?
Revisado: 03-15-23
Someone didn’t do their research. A mare cannot be “part stallion.” A mare is a female. A stallion is a male. Maybe she was “part Thoroughbred?” (As is known). This is getting a ding for editing and research. What else did they get wrong? Otherwise this story pulls at the heart for the horse and the humans. While I have a problem with “part stallion,” I would believe the bacon and eggs thing. My horse loved hot dogs.

Historia
In 1887, Nellie Bly had herself committed to the notorious Blackwell's Island insane asylum in New York City with the goal of discovering what life was like for its patients. While there, she experienced firsthand the shocking abuse and neglect of its inmates, from inedible food to horrifyingly unsanitary conditions. Ten Days in a Mad-House established Bly as a pioneering female journalist and remains a classic of investigative reporting.

That was interesting.
Revisado: 10-24-22
Like Jack London’s People of the Abyss or Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, this gives a window into just how bad things were in the period before unions and labor reform. How easy we have it. The last story also gives a different definition to a term I heard as a child, White Slave. As a child I was told it was a sex worker. In Nelly Bly’s day it was a woman who worked as a piece worker for little to nothing.

Historia
When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men - until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed. Mr. Darcy's passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him.

Rewrite of Austen
Revisado: 02-17-21
It’s one thing to take a story forward. It’s another to rewrite a master, and do it in such an insipid manner. I didn’t get past the badly written proposal by Darcy. It moved so far away from the original and was so devoid of emotion or indignation. Zero stars if I could.
The narrator was pleasant but couldn’t save this farce.

Revisado: 04-06-18
This is Scandal meets The Beverly Hillbillies. True or not, even Hollywood couldn’t come up with this. You can’t listen and not use a phrase with the word cluster in it. Politics aside, true or not, you will be wiping tears of laughter off your face.
