Historia
Durant lucidly describes the philosophical systems of such world-famous “monarchs of the mind” as Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Kant, Voltaire, and Nietzsche. Along with their ideas, he offers their flesh-and-blood biographies, placing their thoughts within their own time and place and elucidating their influence on our modern intellectual heritage. This book is packed with wisdom and wit.

So much Knowledge shared in thoroughly interesting manner of delivery, even if I could only grasp a miniscule portion of the whole story. I like it to the knowledge garnered so far relative to the universe and cosmos. So expansive and mind blowing that you just give up trying to grasp the dimensions and numbers and distances and all that goes into the studying the topic(s). Both the study of the stars and universe isind blowing I now see the geological study of the earth and it's functioning as equally mind blowing. I only wish I had the necessary intellectual capacity to absorb, retain and explain what is contained in this Great Course series of lectures. Kudos to the author and creators for putting it together.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

I enjoyed the book very much. The contention that we are in sort of a self destructive, fait a complie, path of course is disturbing but I'm afraid probably true. Either Armageddon or our own destructive tendencies will cause our demise. The contention that theidern era is relatively peaceful in comparison to other periods if history is in the macro sense true but it sure doesn't feel like it.

Rousseau and Revolution, the 10th volume of the Story of Civilization, ranges over a Europe in ferment, but centers on the passionate rebel-philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the great exponent of the romantic impulse toward self-exploration and social revolt, who contended with the great rationalist Voltaire for the mind of Europe.

Again, My Education Was So Inadequate
Revisado: 10-18-23
Once again I was thouroughly impressed with the author's level of detail and comparisons of the figures and generational contributions addressed in his works. I have a new understanding of how integral, important and controversial religion was in times passed. We in the States grow up with a life of freedom of choice and built in seperation of church and state which is taken for granted to that freedom end. Not so in history. And we are still today grappling with how and why are we here.

Historia
The Age of Louis XIV is the biography of a period (1648 - 1715) that Spengler considered the apex of modern European civilization. "Some centuries hence," Frederick the Great correctly predicted to Voltaire, "they will translate the good authors of the age of Pericles and Augustus." Those authors are lovingly treated here.

Another Wonderful Historical Anthology.
Revisado: 07-30-23
Another simply wonderful account of history. What I live about Durant's writing is that he covers all aspects of life during the times and then places events and personalities in perspective over time, contribution to their field of endeavor, and relative juxtaposition as compared to others in the field. I wish I had paid more attention in history class (or maybe so little time was given to the topic that the paucity of my understanding of European history is not surprising). I am a more learned person for getting through the several volumes completed so far. On to the next.

The Epilogue Summary Encapsulates Man's Dilemma
Revisado: 06-14-23
My understanding of world events and history, from a basic schooling perspective, is so lacking when confronted with such detailed recounting and contextual commentary on history, that I must conclude our educational approach to history is doing a dis-service to contemporary society. This volume has such a comprehensive grasp of historical movements and their far reaching impact that I don't see how its content could be improved upon. I continue to marvel at Durant's work. What a treasure he and his wife are for giving humanity this series. If only more would read/ listen and absorb its content.

Title is Misleading
Revisado: 05-18-23
Like another reviewer comment I too think this volume is mis named since it is in essence a history of the Roman Empire and includes the rise of Christianity as a part of that history. Having said that I continue to be impressed and enthralled by Durant's work. His details and weaving together comparisons of other historic events and contributions is amazing. This series is a treasure and this volume should be read by more people today as a warning of the potential on coming demise of our own civilization from within if we don't heed the lessons to be garnered from Rome's collapse from within. The parallels are there to be seen but we march on blissfully ignorant of what went before us that resulted in it's fall. Maybe it is just the way human nature manifests itself when success and wealth are at such a high level and the civilization extends itself too far or too much to be sustained. Interesting to see the problems of human societal organization do not change over time despite innovations and ingenuity and good intentions but succumb to the evils of greed, pride, ego, fear, conquest, and subjugation by the powerful at the expense of the population being ruled. It begs the question of at its essence, is the human condition that of good or evil? Or does power and wealth change that condition?

The Age of Napoleon, the 11th and final volume of the Story of Civilization, surveys the amazing chain of events that wrenched Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the age of democracy. In this masterful work, listeners will encounter the French Revolution from the storming of the Bastille to the guillotining of the king; and the revolution's leaders - Danton, Desmoulins, Robespierre, and Saint-Just - all cut down by the reign of terror they inaugurated.

A Much More Accomplished Figure Than Commonly Unde
Revisado: 03-18-23
I knew Napoleon was an important historical figure as a military man but I had no idea about the depth and energy he had and aim to unify Europe in his time. What we learn in school is really inadequate. Especially so when you read works like this from Will and Ariel Durant. They are such wonderful researchers and story tellers of history. And they put events and personalities into perspective in relation to historical events and times.
