Historia
Armed with stolen US military technology, the Chinese are producing a frightening new breed of weaponry, led by the ICBM submarine Xia III - a vessel that just might be able to launch a nuclear warhead across the Pacific Ocean and take out an American West Coast city. National security adviser Admiral Arnold Morgan can't let that happen, and he dispatches the most stealthy hunter-killer submarine in the US fleet, the 9,000-ton ultrasecret Seawolf, deep into the dark, forbidden waters of the South China Sea.

I've finally had it...
Revisado: 12-11-16
I realize that this author is incredibly popular. I've contributed to that, reading or listening to just about everything he has ever written. With that said, I just can't do it anymore. In my very humble opinion, this novel just didn't work. The story was ponderous, and the payoff didn't make the journey worthwhile.

Historia
While my beau, Darcy, is off on a mysterious mission, I am once again caught between my high birth and empty purse. I am therefore relieved to receive a new assignment from the queen - especially one that includes lodging. The king's youngest son, George, is to wed Princess Marina of Greece, and I shall be her companion at the supposedly haunted Kensington Palace. My duties are simple: help Marina acclimate to English life, show her the best of London, and, above all, dispel any rumors about George's libertine history.

Fun Story Matched With Fantastic Narration

I don't know that there is a better audiobook combination than Rhys Bowen and Katherine Kellgren. Katherine Hellgren absolutely brings all of the characters to life. This isn't "War and Peace" -but it is an absolutely delightful time!

Historia
In Philadelphia - suffering among the country's highest murder rates - the tension between the Philadelphia Police Department and its Citizens Oversight Committee has long been reaching a boiling point. That turmoil turns from bad to worse shortly after the committee begins targeting police shootings - especially those of twenty-seven-year-old Homicide Sergeant Matt Payne, the "Wyatt Earp of the Main Line" - and then the committee's combative leader is found shot dead point-blank on the front porch of his run-down Philly row house.

Disappointed. Really Disappointed.
Revisado: 08-14-15
I think I've listened to or read every book in each series WEB Griffin has written. Over time you become accustomed to the pace, the dialogue and his incredibly rich cast of characters.
Unfortunately, in my option, with the exception of a great Scott Brick narration, this book lacks virtually all of the charm of his earlier works. This is is just an average crime drama. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with an average crime drama. It just happens to be a big disappointment when you are expecting to be reunited with a great story involving a bunch of old friends.

The Badge of Honor Series is Fantastic-
Revisado: 03-08-15
This is one of my favorite series by W.E.B. Griffin, and this installment did not disappoint. Having read a few of the reviews, I'm not sure why all the unhappiness with the narration. Michael Russotto narrated 6 of the first 7 books in this series, and, to my ears, his voice is the respective voice of the characters.
Griffin is one of my favorite authors. His characters are rich beyond words. If you get this deep into the series and you don't haven't grown to love Matthew Mark Paine, Peter Wohl and the gang, I'm not sure if you are capable of seeing lightning and hearing thunder. (A little Griffin figure of speech there :))
One of my favorite aspects of Griffin's writing is his dialogue. The bad new about that is that he has spoiled me for other writers. For example, when you go from one of W.E.B. Griffin's books to a Baldacci novel (in which nobody on Earth speaks like his characters...and I still like Baldacci novels, just saying...) you are left missing the witty dialogue of Griffin.
Great author. Great series. Great novel.

Historia
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

The Weakest of the Trilogy by far...
Revisado: 12-31-14
Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors. With that said, this is (in my opinion) by far the weakest in the trilogy and perhaps my least favorite Ken Follett novel.
First, great historical fiction teaches you about the past- and I feel like I have learned a great deal of history from the first two books of The Century Trilogy. That did not happen in this book.
He portrays American political events through a lens of black and white, made up of good guys (liberals and Democrats) and bad guys (conservatives and Republicans). I'm pretty partisan, and would guess that my opinions would be the opposite of his. With that said, even from my perspective I know that Carter probably wasn't as miserable of a President as I thought he was and that Reagan probably wasn't as great as I thought he was. However, there is no nuance whatsoever in Follett's portrayal of American Political figures.
In short, I thought the historical perspective (relative to the US) was naive and one-sided. The characters were less interesting than in the other novels and the story was less compelling.
With all of that said, I don't know that there is such a thing as a bad Ken Follett novel, and, the narration was first rate.

Might be the worst written book I have ever finished...
Revisado: 12-31-14
I am a loyal reader. When I start on a series, it is really hard for me to not listen to every book that comes out in that series. So, as utterly cringe-worthy as this book was, I am probably going to get the next one.
Dialogue is the driver of a good audiobook, and that is the biggest problem I have with this book. The dialogue in this book was just so poorly written. I'd cite examples, but I just don't have the energy. Unfortunately, the utterly corny dialogue is narrated in an equally corny manner. I'm entirely comfortable saying that real people do not speak like any of Baldacci's characters.
It's not that the plot is bad, or that the characters aren't interesting. Like most of Baldacci's novels, the plot is fine and the characters are somewhat engaging.
This novel had me missing the dialogue of W.E.B. Griffin (although long winded, I just love the guy) as I've recently finished (for the second time) The Corp Series.
With all of that said, if you like Baldacci, you will like the book.

One of my favorite W.E.B. Griffin novels
Revisado: 08-10-14
The Lieutenants introduces you to timeless characters that you will never forget.
W.E.B. Griffin is one of my favorite authors, but not every person I have recommended them to have enjoyed them as much as I have. I've thought a lot about that and I believe there is a pace to his novels that I love. I find the level of military specificity and detail incredibly interesting, and this lends itself to a more relaxed pace. Its a little bit like listening to a great baseball game. There is a certain pace that I find very comfortable.
The themes of honor, loyalty and "the Brotherhood" of war make for a great listen. Again, the characters have become incredibly familiar to me and this is the first novel in a wonderful series.

In A River Runs Through It, Norman Maclean claims that “in my family, there is no clear line between religion and fly-fishing.” Nor is there a clear line between family and fly-fishing. It is the one activity where brother can connect with brother and father with son, bridging troubled relationships at the junction of great trout rivers in western Montana. In Maclean’s autobiographical novella, it is the river that makes them realize that life continues and all things are related.

Loved the Movie- and the Short Story is Better!
Revisado: 08-10-14
The central short story, "A River Runs Through it"- deals with the themes of love, family, obligation, and the huge challenge of what it is that we can and can't do on behalf of those that we love. Of course, fly fishing is also mentioned a time or two. :)
I loved this and I glad I found it. The themes are timeless and really resonated with me. I can't imagine anybody not thoroughly enjoying these stories.

Historia
Andy Carpenter isn't sure what to think when he gets a mysterious phone call from a good friend, policeman Pete Stanton, asking him to drop everything, drive to an unfamiliar address, and bring his girlfriend, Laurie Collins. He certainly isn't expecting to show up at a crime scene. But that's exactly where he arrives - at the house where Pete has just discovered the body of ex-convict Danny Balfour. Upstairs are Danny's now orphaned four-year-old son and basset hound. And that, Andy discovers, is why he and Laurie were called to the scene - Pete wants them to take care of the boy and the dog so they won't get thrown into the "system". This is already asking a lot, but soon Pete needs another big favor from Andy. Pete himself has come under suspicion for Danny's murder, and he needs defense attorney Andy to represent him - and to find out what really happened in Danny's house that day!

The best Andy Carpenter yet!
Revisado: 08-10-14
First, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Andy Carpenter series. There is not another series of books that I have had universally positive feedback from recommendations I have made to friends and family. So, if you haven't listened to (or read) any of the other novels in this series, I would strongly recommend that you start with the first one and enjoy the journey!
You will find the perfect marriage of story and narrator, as Grover Gardner IS Andy Carpenter.
Now, regarding "Hounded"- this is my favorite Andy Carpenter novel. It delivers all of the usual ingredients that make this series so satisfying. Great narration, humor, wonderful characters, a few good plot twists, and adds to it conclusion that is so satisfying, I listened to the end of it several times. :)
Thank you Audible, David Rosenfelt and Grover Gardner!
