Historia
The product of 30 years of friendship and conversation, Jay Parini's Empire of Self probes behind the glittering surface of Gore Vidal's colorful life to reveal the complex emotional and sexual truth underlying his celebrity-strewn life. But there is plenty of glittering surface as well - a virtual who's who of the American Century, from Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart through the Kennedys, Princess Margaret, and the creme de la creme of Hollywood.

measured and explanatory
Revisado: 07-04-24
Jay Parini is an excellent biographer. He inserts himself only when it's appropriate. this is a work about Gore Vidal and Parini respects this. The doll is important for understanding our American culture during his lifetime, and, through his historical novels, also an increased appreciation of prior times.

Good, but not lonesome Dove
Revisado: 05-26-24
this is the story of three characters, with each story. the other. it will take patience to get through the first story because it seems corny, but this changes with the second story. it's a good book, worth reading, but it is certainly not Lonesome Dove

Historia
When did we begin to be as self-centered as we are today? At what point did we expect to have the right to determine our own lives? When did we first ask the question, how can I be free? It all began in the 1790s in a quiet university town in Germany when a group of playwrights, poets, and writers put the self at center stage in their thinking, writing, and their lives.

Historia
Saul Bellow evokes all the rich colors and exotic customs of a highly imaginary Africa in this acclaimed comic novel about a middle-aged American millionaire who, seeking a new, more rewarding life, descends upon an African tribe. Henderson's awesome feats of strength and his unbridled passion for life win him the admiration of the tribe - but it is his gift for making rain that turns him from mere hero into messiah. A hilarious, often ribald story, Henderson the Rain King is also a profound look at the forces that drive a man through life.

aside from the expressions used by/ " The voice" of the main character, the book is modern, and this surprised me.

interesting characters but too much of them
Revisado: 03-13-24
John Irving is a fantastic writer. but I think this is the least enjoyable of the many books he has written that I've read. it is simply too long. it would seem like editing wouldn't be very difficult - for example, why have the long screen plays?

The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

McBride can write characters- he's like John Irving
Revisado: 11-21-23
while the plot is not best highly constructed, or at least fast moving, as other works like heaven and earth grocery store, this is a good read. It is best enjoyed if you've read another of McBrides books first.

this is seriously great literature, not just a good novel. and it's own way, it reminds me of American Pastoral, portraying part of America had a particular time, but that will not be dated ever.
