Historia
Imajica is an epic beyond compare: vast in conception, obsessively detailed in execution, and apocalyptic in its resolution. At its heart lies the sensualist and master art forger Gentle, whose life unravels when he encounters Judith Odell, whose power to influence the destinies of men is vaster than she knows, and Pie "oh" pah, an alien assassin who comes from a hidden dimension.

action packed, dark but superficial
Revisado: 10-05-24
Dragged on in places but generally pretty gripping although the characters are cardboard cut outs. lots of sadistic sexual and violent themes but also a nice goddess angle. the story would be better if the characters had more credibility. it's a bit like an slightly not so b grade epic horror fantasy that is well written aside from the bland emotional depth.

Historia
Following the enormous success of 2004 bestseller and critics' favorite Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke delivers a delicious collection of ten stories set in the same fairy-crossed world of 19th-century England. With Clarke's characteristic historical detail and diction, these dark, enchanting tales unfold in a slightly distorted version of our own world, where people are bedeviled by mischievous interventions from the fairies.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-22-24
Disappointing. The stories just ended abruptly and characters didn't grab me. If you've read Jonathan Strange or Piranesi you'll feel let down by this one.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

I wish it had never ended
Revisado: 09-17-24
So much comedy in this epic alternative magical version of Britain. Loveable characters, ridiculously villainous villains, gripping story telling and phenomenal prose. I particularly love the relationship between madness and magic. Absolutely satisfying, a masterpiece. I wish it hadn't ended. It's a book you wish you could crawl into and run away with forever.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

captivating and concerning
Revisado: 08-30-24
I think the full title of this book must be considered - the necessity of violence. This is a very readable "dark academia" (I never knew there was such a category) historical fiction written by a young author and I must say I am very impressed by this young author's brilliance as the work is very captivating. This is also a very political work yet somehow feels like a young adult read despite the very adult themes. It's an emotive and compelling alternative British history of Oxford focusing on colonialism, racism, classism and inequality, valid and important themes with references to Fanon. It paints a grim picture with the only options available to the protagonists as extreme sacrifice and violence to combat the system. It's a masterful narrative with emotional and intellectual weight but carries an element of fundamentalism. Incredibly readable, very well put together with tons of etymology as a magical system subplot which evolves into a great philosophical argument. Disturbing and beautiful, ingenious and entertaining yet it somehow left me feeling the authors politics are extremist and this work makes a case for extremism. This is not an argument I feel qualified to answer, but I do feel concerned that as to the influence upon young adult readers who I feel this book is really best suited for. Would I read this author again? Yes, definitely more of her new work that follows. Did I enjoy this book? Absolutely. Is it historical fiction? In places but confused with the fantastical universe. Fantasy? No. Political fantasy? Yes. What is it exactly then? A clever political allegory.
Read on audible and narrator is superb.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Horrible narrator
Revisado: 07-15-24
it may be possible this book isn't as terrible as the totally unemotive robotic yet human heavily British accented narrator makes it sound, but I just couldn't make it past 15 minutes without deciding life was too short for such agony.
