If I loved Ina Garten before, I adore her now. This is a down-to-earth account of her life, from a difficult childhood to her confident, inspired career in food and business.

I listened to this because I’m of an age where U2 has been the soundtrack of my life. As a musician, I was fascinated by how this band formed, gelled musically, and managed to stay together for 4+ decades. What I was less clear on was the far reaches of Bono’s activism and how he worked with presidents, world leaders, leaders of industry and friends to bring debt relief to and fight disease in third world countries. And Bono tells stories of that cooperation with deep humility and heart. I didn’t know how I’d get through an audiobook this long—but it was riveting and I seriously could not stop.

Setting is great; story too melodramatic

The best part of this book for me was the gorgeous and striking descriptions of Alaska and life on its dangerous frontier. The story, as it lurched to its end, was overblown and melodramatic. Most of the characters didn’t seem real or interesting to me. And even though it might have been realistic for its time, the abuse situation was painful and tedious to read.

Just like a starter, Robin Sloan’s stories grow on you. This was a tiny, delightful return to the world of Sourdough.

So much going on in this book! The wedding we’ve all been waiting for, the return of Carlos, and a very interesting backstory for Lance. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in the murder mystery.

Molly Gray is a fascinating character, and I loved many of the themes in this book: subjective truth, evil and the invisibility of maids and middle-aged women, for example. But the way the police and justice system operate in the book are so far removed from reality, it was hard for me to get past it.

A romance between real people, charming setting

This is not an escapist romance, despite the setting. It’s a story about two imperfect people with a lot of baggage, who must decide if it’s worth the risk to be together. I don’t usually read romances, but I enjoyed that this story was more grounded in reality than most. Admittedly, I needed a short book so I could finish my 2022 Goodreads challenge. This fit the bill and I truly enjoyed it.
