Intriguing and Familiar
Revisado: 12-29-24
This was an interesting story that felt like a glimpse into a world that I don’t know. At the same time, the humanity is familiar.

Historia
When summoned to Georgetown, South Carolina, sisters Mariah Clark and Sabrina Holland both assume their ailing grandfather's health has gotten worse. Neither expects their grandmother's undeniable request—save the family restaurant. Mariah is at a crossroad in her life. After being dumped by her husband and forced to walk away from their diner that she helped rescue from bankruptcy, bitter feelings consume her. Even though the restaurant has been in the family for eighty-six years, giving her all to another struggling business isn't something she wants to do.

Excellent Narration; Beautiful Story
Revisado: 12-03-24
As a South Carolina native, I cringe every time I see an audio book supposedly set in my home state - especially the low country. Most of the voice actors miss things like pronouncing “Muscadine” with a long ‘I’. Missing that kind of nuance distracts from an honest setting. This audio performance nailed it and turned a good book into a beautiful story.

Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

What a treat!!!
Revisado: 06-09-24
John Grisham is a master at delivering a lovely tribute to the South and to all of its complicated people. This was no exception. The story was inspiring, haunting, sad, funny, and reverent- all at the same time. The protagonist may be my new favorite. And….Whoopi was incredible - what a treat!!!

Historia
Everyone refers to the St. Cecelia as “the Saint.” If you grew up coming here, you were “a Saint.” If you came from the wrong side of the river, you were “an Ain’t.” Traci Eddings was one of those outsiders whose family wasn’t rich enough or connected enough to vacation here. But she could work here. One fateful summer she did, and married the boss’s son. Now, she’s the widowed owner of the hotel, determined to see it return to its glory days, even as staff shortages and financial troubles threaten to ruin it. Plus, her greedy and unscrupulous brother-in-law wants to make sure she fails.

Historia
Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all...except a shot at being more than friends. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing.

Good, not great
Revisado: 03-18-24
The story was good enough to finish it but I wasn’t invested in the characters. It felt like JG was trying to reach a different demographic (older divorcees) which is great. However, it felt a bit forced.
