I have long loved Jeff Daniels (nope, didn’t see Dumb and Dumber) from earlier days to today. The Newsroom was a typical Sorkin show (solid dialogue and lots of it, on target, political and great fun/sarcasm) and Jeff was great as the lead actor. I’ve been to a performance of his and it’s very much like these episodes … a story connected by songs. Those episodes are like you’re listening to him at a place he’s comfortable and in a great mood.

It takes a bit to for pieces to start fitting together - what is a novel approach to telling a story. The performances are excellent, the story increasingly engaging as you go along and, in the end, worth listening to. Give it a bit ….

I rarely write reviews, but I am motivated to do so this time because of the comments that were made about politics in the story. These comments were more or less dismissive of the importance of politics play in everything we do. And there’s been no time in American history since the war of independence in which we have had as much tumult as we have in the country. A story that focuses on “a Jew a black and an Appalachian native” almost begs politics to be part of the discussion.

I thought the story was very interesting as it cast of a hard on both relationships between people from “different camps“ but also how memories are and are not accurate. The live voices of those involved was an excellent addition to the book, and the evolution of the story quite masterful.

Consider listening to it. And if you are not in agreement with the politics, so be it. It’s the perspective of the speaker(s) and is quite naturally Just a part of the story… And it is just a part. Politics in their rawest form are very little of this book. But life is politics… From who you choose as your friends when you’re in school (do you go for the popular kids or the nerds or the jocks or the wildflowers or the…), who you partner with (if you do) and who you admire.

I have listened to it twice… because it’s a naturally story that helps me see the viewpoint of others. And if there is one thing missing from our country right now it is the inability to see through the viewpoint of another.

... this is my 10th review. This book is engaging from stem to stern, from top to bottom. Brandi shares her inner self with the world in a way few have ever done, warts and all. She lays plain her hurdles and joys. She provides support to all the “misfits” and those who society and the church often marginalize. Her tenacity and drive are amazing, her accomplishments many, her learning overwhelming, and her gift to us amazing.

In addition to the book, you’ll be serenaded acoustically. It’s a concert just for you. You’ll be grateful for it ... and you’ll listen to it again soon. For her words, her heart, her honesty and the wish that she lived next door.

I cannot imagine how much is actually known to have distilled it to this book. An amazing oral history that gives the reader a new place in history, a place of better comprehension of that awful day (and later days). One of the most surprising pieces to me was being able to relax judgment on the president’s apparent “airborne escaping” and To better understand why all of that occurred and what his position was during all of that.

Bur that was only part of the experience. Faces were placed on those that survived and those that did not. It is compelling. It is riveting. It is sad. It is relatable.

I remain humbled by having read it and having been protected from such horror. I hope “never again” will be the case. I am not convinced.

But she has the data to back to her assertions and declarations. Having had this all laid out so cogently, I can how the slippery slope of power grabbing amidst the ignorance ( but not the knowing) of constitutional mandates has gotten us where we are today.

Thank you Rachdow for the education, even though it has made me more worried than ever about our future as a country.

Great read.

.... and I just finished it. With great humility. Michelle Obama grants us insight into her life and that of the first African-American family to live in the White House as this nation’s first family. She wss, not incidentally, the wife of the 44th President of the U.S. but I swear she’d be great to have for a friend, neighbor or even a relative you looked forward to seeing but a few times a year.

This book is frank, well-reasoned and a gift to us all, not only in the insights gained but also in her conveyance of her values, family, integrity, and commitment. She didn’t always have a plan, but she always had solid values, family who loved her, and the clear intention of making a contribution. And she learned along the way, and she brought us along to learn the lessons.

This book is made better by her telling us the story herself.

I have not listened to it for the last time.

It’s an amazing story, made better by the writing and reading. It never seemed as long as it was and is in the top of my recommend list. Kudos to all involved.
