Luke is an amazing narrator but apparently, he cant sing-narrate. There was a humanoid mermaid/siren character and she sang while she talk. But it was bad. Otherwise, everything is great.

My expectations weren't high coming into this book. The narrator changed and in a way, we, the readers of Book 1-3, would know the general storyline of this book. What we don't know is how Medrano will write it.

And it was much better than anticipated. I expected a "building" type of plot, which it was. It was building/developing Medrano's magic system. But there is a lot more, a lot of bonding and character background.

As for Goer, it works. Book 1-3 is a dark fantasy so the other narrator was great for that. This is not and Goer's more cheery voice is amazing and fits the book well.

I actually shed tears.

Andrea Parsneau did a good job. She needs a bigger database of voices for her characters. She needs to make it more distinct, unique or whatever. It's not bad right now, but that's what she can improve on. However, she can do a large range of voices, from deep gruffy male voices to kiddy girl voices.

The story is well executed but the ideas are like straight out of an Idiot's Guide to Writing a Novel. It's kind of like customer services. It provides good services but doesn't take the extra step to provide personalized services.

The author changed the race Elves to another name. So why not change more? Or create his own? The extra step. The whole evil master plan and antagonist is very straight out of the book. It isn't to the point of overused yet, but it's not rare, or uncommon. However, the author did had some uniqueness, such as the protagonist's weapon and skills. Those were fun parts. But it wasn't a major thing. It was like icing on the cake (the store bought sponge cake mix cake).

The plot is also driven by stupidity quite a bit. For example, I know a forest have traps and alarms. But I still end up being careless and step on them; and thus, everyone knows I am here now. (Nothing of the sort happened in the book, just an analogy).

I don't know why. I can't explain it in words but just like the Play to Live series, it gets worse by the book. The first one or two are the best and it just gets worse. Maybe it's just overly drawn out.

That aside, Jonathan Yen has a very whiny voice. Not sure if it's because of the character but he has a very whiny voice. This also means the protagonist is very whiny. For example, "But Stacy..." x100. He goes on and on and on and even talks with himself and get sidetracked. Like, in book 1, my tolerance is untouched. Book 2 get diminished. Book 3 is starting to dry out. Book 4 is fml. I didn't finish book 4.

If you can just cut out all the whiny-ness,I'll probably love it. But as it is, 3 stars is very generous.

A DnD inspired board game converted into a book.

Depends on the person but I feel that Vikas Adam did an amazing job. The characters have their own voice/personality and you know it's by the same person but when you're really into listening it, it feels like it's narrated by multiple people.

The plot is pretty decent. Think of a DnD inspired board game where you gain money, build rooms, kill adventurers, etc. It has all of that bundled inside a mediocre plot. The reason why I used a board game as the comparison is because there's quite a bit of mechanic explanations in the book. Like in a manual, you'll usually have some mediocre plot and then explanation of how things work, like how adventurers level up or how the dungeon gets stronger. And this book gives you exactly that.

There are bits and stuff where the author does the same cliche crap. Like, he "forced" a scene to happen because that's how he visioned it. He didn't bother flushing out all the details to see if it totally makes sense. For example, "there is a dungeon and it's not limited to 1 party per run. You can have multiple parties going in at the same time. And all parties can and will run into "new mobs" as long as they're in different rooms or there is some minor time gap in between. So that means, the mobs will respawn pretty quickly. But when the climax comes, the dungeon runs out of mobs to respawn while having a ridiculous overflowing mass of essence (mana). And when the final moment comes, the dungeon somehow turns 2 (or so) healing mobs into a whole pack of healing mobs. It makes absolutely NO sense. Shenanigans like this is really annoying but fortunately, it's not everywhere."

It got good reviews on Goodreads, so I decided to pick up on it. But it was a disappointment.

Daughter needs money? Overused but sure. But the character is just bad. He is very whiney, by both the author and narrator. He complains about everything. He always think this and that is not important and a waste of time and ends up regretting it after.

Then, there is the game itself. It just makes little sense to me. The author isn't much of a game designer, not enough of one to write a LitRPG. I don't want to spoil it but it just doesn't work.

Next is the narrator. He needs to google how to pronounce many words. It is bad, like "elves to alves". And his narrated the main character into an even more annoying character than it already is. It is literally like a snobby whining kid.

The character is mediocre.
The game is less than mediocre.
The plot is mediocre.
The narrator is just bad.

Where does Fridays with the Wizards rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's pretty high. It's near the top ones. And especially so for Children's book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Castle, who else? We, as the readers/listeners, must also follow the rest and love our dear Castle.

Any additional comments?

I don't know why I like this book and this series so much. But there are probably issues. But for some reason, it's not as apparent as other books. One of the issues I have with most other books is consistency, or a developed plot versus a forced plot.

Everything in this book and its series seemed "natural". Event A led to Event B and that led to Event C and it made sense. If I were in the protagonist's shoes, I would probably done something similar. Other than the plot itself, which was totally awesome, this is one of the main reasons why I enjoyed this book. Things made sense.

What disappointed you about A Kind of Magic?

Sophie is just as "bad ass" as she ever was, which was absolutely not. The characters always boasted about how "bad ass" Sophie is and how no one should get on her bad side. But she does nothing and is incapable of doing anything. From a normal human to a queen to a princess, she is the most useless [Blank] ever.

Would you ever listen to anything by Shanna Swendson again?

Nope. I only listened to this due to Suzy Jackson.

Have you listened to any of Suzy Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Suzy Jackson is as amazing as ever. I really enjoyed her performances.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Kind of Magic?

Rather than "cutting" scenes from A Kind of Magic, I suggest Shanna Swendson changing her way of writing. Rather than nailing plot points into the book and then forcing the rest of plot to fit it, use the plot points are milestones and work the plot towards them. I really suggest her developing the plot and not forcing it.

For instance, when her characters make a relatively important decision, would anyone off the street also make a similar decision? If it's no, and in most cases, it's a big no for her characters, then it's a big issue. Characters aren't natural. Think of a movie or show, the actors aren't acting anymore. They became puppets and are being controlled and manipulated by strings.
