A tale of two stories; one interesting, one not

While the overarching story in this book is interesting, I had a REALLY hard time with Rielle's half of the book. Her character is so very boring, and honestly very very stupid. Her Naivete was not charming or endearing in the least. If the whole book had been about Tyen, it would have been perfect. The important parts of Rielle's story could have been wrapped up in a chapter at the end of the book.

The narration on Rielle's section, combined with lack of interest I had in it, physically put me to sleep several times. Tyen's narration was a bit better it still felt like everything was pronounced weirdly just to make the book seem different, which made it a little harder to listen to.

I might pick up the next one eventually, since Tyen's story is very interesting, and it seems like Rielle's has the chance to pick up.

B.V. Larson with a rare miss

I've enjoyed a lot of Larson's other work, but the whole book, from the main character to the plot, felt fake and contrived somehow. Sparhawk is frankly, an Idiot. His rationals for his actions go beyond the laughably stupid culture that has supposedly developed on earth to just pure baffling. The pacing of the book is way out of whack, I kept thinking it must have reached its conclusion only to have it drag on.

David Drummond's attempts at character voices bad

Drummond's voice attempts grate on my soul and detract from an otherwise interesting book. if he had just stuck with one voice it would have been preferable since his normal tones aren't bad. but ask him to do a female or a child? be prepared for a bleeding brain.

What did you like best about Tangled Threads? What did you like least?

Best thing about these books are that they are fast-paced and set in an interesting world. There is a lot of repetition between the books, same descriptions, same jokes, and the author seems to think that you can have a detailed conversation with everyone just by looking into their eyes since that's all people seem to do.

What was most disappointing about Jennifer Estep’s story?

Gin is a terrible Assassin. Jennifer goes on and on about how awesome she is and what a pro she is, citing all her perfect training... Which she consistently ignores "just this once". She certainly gave Gin all the skills and resources that she should need to take care of business, but she is always screwing up each hit over and over again, steadfastly refusing to use her magic until she's been beaten into a bloody pulp. She always manages to survive through pure luck, which she is constantly cursing. With all the possibilities surrounding elemental magic she sticks to her knives, rather than exploring ice shards or flinging 100 pound rocks at her enemies. Except for some very minor uses of a crossbow (so far, I'm partly through the next book) she invariably passes up great opportunities to pop targets anonymously and from a distance with a rifle or crossbow in favour of getting her butt kicked again. Also, do explosives not exist in this world? A small shape charge could have offed half her targets that are so tough. Don't worry though Gin will always survive because every single enemy will try and talk her to death rather than offing her with a bullet to the head.

Which character – as performed by Lauren Fortgang – was your favorite?

Fin is by far the best character, he actually carries a gun.

Was Tangled Threads worth the listening time?

I guess, I bought the next one, so it was good enough. Really wish the series would get some variation going though.

The books pacing felt weird

What did you like best about Lucifer's Hammer? What did you like least?

Near the end the pacing picks up quite a bit, and I really enjoyed how each of the characters was brought together. That being said the entire first portion of the book leading up to Hammerfall felt like it should have been one or two chapters. I guess science buffs might enjoy the long winded scientific explanations in a working society, but I kept wanting the comet to hit already.

Could you see Lucifer's Hammer being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, it would be incredibly boring for the whole first season, maybe if you started it at the time the comet actually hit and then filled characters back stories in as it went along.

Any additional comments?

Slow start aside, it did a pretty good job of exploring several different characters points of view and showing off how their underlying motivations would help or hinder them in an apocalypse.

Would you try another book from David Weber and Eric Flint and/or Peter Larkin?

Peter Larkin was capable, despite a few weirdly timed pauses and transition to new chapters happening instantly after he finishes speaking. I would probably stay away from the author duo in the future since the story started off so slowly it was difficult to pay attention.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Possibly, unlike most books made into movies I think this one could benefit from the scaling down that usually takes place, you wouldn't have to listen to long winded political debates in a movie.

Any additional comments?

I got it in a sale so it was worth it, wouldn't pay full price for it.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Shepherd has a tendancy to focus more on political nuances and makes action scenes brief and unfulfilling and this certainly holds true for the first half of the book. The second half picks up a bit, however I think you could have condensed a good 4 hours of playtime out of it.

What didn’t you like about Dina Pearlman’s performance?

Dina is consistently adding inflections and additional punctuation to her narration, as some have mentioned on this series already. Additionally, it seems like half her characters have very whiny high pitched voices, which detract greatly from the enjoyment of the book. It really seems like she's trying too hard to differentiate every individual characters voice, no matter how how important they are.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending was quite emotional.

Any additional comments?

While I have enjoyed this series so far I find myself unsure if I want to continue it at this point, maybe with a more stable narration it wouldn't feel a bit like work to slog through the lulls.
