Historia
When an executed original of a secret treaty between England and France, known as the French Treaty, is stolen from the country estate of Lord Halifax, Scotland Yard asks Joanna, Dr. John Watson, Jr., and Dr. John Watson, Sr., to use their detective skills to participate in the hunt for the missing treaty. As the government becomes more restless to find the missing document and traditional investigative means fail to turn up the culprit, Joanna is forced to devise a clever plan to trap the thief and recover the missing treaty.

a story in ignorance
Revisado: 06-29-18
I listened to the whole thing but almost stopped when the supposedly brilliant and well educated Ms. Blaylock proved as ignorant of history as a millennial. She said that the country house where the theft of the Naval Treaty took place was built in 1690 on a grant of land given by Charles II (died 1685, succeeded by James II who was deposed in the Glorious Revollution of 1688. Well the grant may have happened before charles II's death and the house built in 1690, but the owners could hardly have been hidding from ax happy Charles II since he was dead and not known for chopping off heads in the first place. William III was king in 1690. Clearly the author does not know or care about history much. It is not as if he got some medieval Edward mixed up with another in a passing reference. The Glorious Revolution and the kings since Charles I who was aquanted with the wrong side of the ax until the modern history of Britan began with William and the agreement of the ruling classes not to judicially murder their opposition as long as they refrained from actual treason are important.
Shame on you Mr. Author, for not checking wikipedia at least.
Otherwise, the story though derivative in the extreme, was intriguing and free from brutal violence on-stage. Good nonsense to de-stress on.

3rd rate romance and false fantasy
Revisado: 04-29-18
The author's main character's main character seems made up and put into made up situations I wanted something trivial with lords and things but this was too trivial. Even fantasy needs real human relationships.

Historia
At the request of Her Majesty's government, private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker agrees to take on his least favorite kind of assignment - he's to provide security for a secret conference with the French government. But shortly after the parties land at the island, Lord Hargrave is killed by a sniper shot, and the French ambassador's head of security is found stabbed to death. The only means of egress from the island - a boat - has been sent away, and the means of signaling for help has been destroyed.

Not good action or propagranda
Revisado: 12-09-17
And darn it, I like Gingrich and usually agree with his analyses of events. I heard about it on Fox News but this novel is too grim for its thriller format. The authors are too in love with their villians. It is "No country for old men" without the literary distinction. The authors mistake violence and guts on the ground with suspense. It is an allegory with one dimensional action figures off the shelf, the evil unrelieved except by long boring, philosophical and theological maunderings which must hve come from Gingrich. Tolstoy might have gotten away with pages on the nature of things in "War and peace" but in this novel, these guys don't.

Historia
When a bomb destroys the Special Irish Branch of Scotland Yard, all fingers point to the increasingly brazen factions of Irish dissidents seeking liberation from English rule. Volunteering their services to the British government, Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn set out to infiltrate a secret cell of the Irish Republican Brotherhood known as the Invisibles. Posing as a reclusive German bomb maker and his anarchist apprentice, they are recruited for the group's ultimate plan: to bring London to its knees and end the monarchy forever.

Perfect Nonsense
Revisado: 12-09-17
A bang-up tale in the Sherlock Holmes tradition without being a precious shadow of a Holmes novel. It you want a few hours diversion, a good listen as the miles go by, this is the thing. Barker is a Scottish, Chinese raised, physical and mental paragon. His Watson, LLewellen is an Oxford trianed, and prison acquanted Welshman. Their adventures in this book involve going underground to foil a bomb plot by an Irish revolutiionary faction. There is plenty of excitement, entertaining characters, Victorian atmosphere. The author has the tension, release, tension, release thing down pat. The Irish plotters are 3 dimensional and the quthor does not fall in love with them. There is lots of violence but very little blood and grume. In all it is nonsense perfectly done.

The pot boileth over
Revisado: 03-07-15
Would you try another book from Anne Perry and/or David Colacci?
Yes. I like her characters, and I usually can allow myself to be let along through the plot of her books
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
ho hum ... because I didn't believe in the main challenge .. the threat of Bubonic Plague .. Getting plague no picnic. World wide pandemic, no way. Oh me of little faith. The author's seduction of the reader not sufficient for me in this book.
Which scene was your favorite?
When the two detectives descend into the bowels of the sailing ship near the end of the book.
Could you see The Shifting Tide being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I hope not. Good series of books, but bad plot in this one.
