Historia
Before she mastered the art of French cooking in midlife, Julia Child found herself working in the secrets trade in Asia during World War II. Single, six foot two, and thirty years old, Julia McWilliams took a job working for America's first espionage agency, years before cooking or Paris entered the picture. The Secret War of Julia Child traces Julia's transformation from ambitious Pasadena blue blood to Washington, DC file clerk, to head of General "Wild Bill" Donovan's secret File Registry as part of the Office of Strategic Services.

Remember, this is fiction
Revisado: 01-05-25
The story is well-told and does give homage to a strong, brilliant woman. It’s too bad that it’s so heavily embellished, though, as to bury her true story. I read a lot of historical fiction and am fine with small embellishments that help a story flow. Making up significant events, though? Surviving ship sinking and airplane crashes is too far. The author’s notes emphasize this is a work of fiction amd makes an attempt of justifying the liberties taken, but it is still irresponsible and disrespectful. Inevitably, someone will skip those notes and perpetuate the idea that Julia Child flew into a jealous rage and tore up a map Paul had made, after seeing him pay attention to another woman. And this is how fake news starts. When reading this, keep Google close at hand and use it liberally to find out which major events that allegedly formed Julia’s experiences actually happened.

I thoroughly enjoyed the storylines in this book! They woven together beautifully, if occasionally predictably. The variety of characters is fantastic. I do have to wonder why the German characters have English accents, though…. Still, well-told stories with insights into WWII England.

Well researched and written
Revisado: 12-27-24
I love well- researched historical fiction! The author does a great job of bringing you into Emma’s experience of a widowed mother at the onset of WWII in Britain. But not in London, for a change. We tend to think of the Blitz in London at that time, but other cities endured devastation from Nazi bombs. This is an exciting and heart-wringing read, about not only WWII Britain, but also the Boots’ Booklovers Libraries. I encourage you to look up the history. It’s fascinating for any bibliophile!

I love this author. She crafts characters you feel connected to and car about. You want to see more of their stories. The only thing is them at the ending came abruptly, rushing through a remaining story that I would have loved to see played out. I wish we could know more!.

Such a sweet little story! It’s just long enough for the plot with a satisfying story. I loved the cameos by the characters in the Edinburgh book shop! Great fun!

I had t heard of the Switchboard Soldiers before picking up this book. Their story and important role in the Great War should be remembered as much as any other soldier. I loved this telling of this part of history, and the personal stories really touched me. It’s well-told, well-written, and well-researched. An excellent read!

Sad to see this end!
Revisado: 12-13-24
It was over too soon! I had trouble stepping away from this book, as I kept thinking about the characters when I wasn’t reading it. It does get a bit preachy, not In a religious way but more of the rousing a patriotic crowd kind of way. A really good read about women coping with the Blitz.

Despise this book
Revisado: 12-07-24
I can hardly express what an unpleasant book this was to read. I persevered and made it through by skipping huge chunks of it. It says something that I could skip a chapter or two at a time and not be lost. The main character is wholly frustrating.she is stupid and weak-willed. The lengthy, self-indulgent inner monologues are maddening and do nothing to move the plot forward. Even when she’s trapped under ice in a freezing lake, about to drown, she pauses to have a lengthy conversation with herself. Even worse, the details in the plot get more violent and sick as the book goes on. right up to the end. Save yourself the frustration and skip this one

Overall, this is an enjoyable read. Not too tense or suspenseful. It has some good turns in the story. You do have to suspend disbelief sometimes when you find yourself asking, “Who would say/do that?” I’m not sure I feel compelled to read more of the series; though.

So much detail!
Revisado: 12-02-24
This is a very compelling story and an enduring mystery. The author offers a plausible solution, as well. The book is also a good view on motion pictures, the studio, the stars, and the influencers in the 1920s. It does stall in the details of some scenes and loses momentum. Still, a very engaging read!
