Historia
A dashing Regency romance from the legendary Georgette Heyer, founder of the genre. Captain John Staple's exploits against Napoleon's armies in the Iberian Peninsula have earned him the nickname 'Crazy Jack' amongst his comrades in the Dragoon Guards - but once the Battle of Waterloo brings the curtain down once and for all on the Napoleonic Wars, the boisterous, adventure-loving captain finds life in peacetime intolerably dull.

Historia
In the tradition of John Richardson's Picasso, a commanding new biography of the Italian master's tumultuous life and mysterious death. For four hundred years Caravaggio's (1571-1610) staggering artistic achievements have thrilled viewers, yet his volatile personal trajectory - the murder of Ranuccio Tomasini, the doubt surrounding Caravaggio's sexuality, the chain of events that began with his imprisonment on Malta and ended with his premature death - has long confounded historians.

Caravaggio's bad behavior rather than his good art
Revisado: 04-15-24
I'm interested in art. This book focused too much on the faults of the Church, the rich, Caravaggio and his cadre of criminal chums. No effort made to resolve logical conflicts between Caravaggio as "typical" artistic temperament and the dramatically different personalities of Botticelli, Fra Angelico, Michelangelo, etc. The voicing was excellent.

Imagine you could travel back to the 14th century. What would you see? What would you smell? More to the point, where are you going to stay? And what are you going to eat? Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages. The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail.

It just gets tiresome.
Revisado: 10-04-23
As a Anglophile, I watch 80% Brit movies and TV, read @70% Brit books, preferring pre-2000 before Political Correctness etc. permeated all aspects of culture.
However, there is a profound anti-religious bias in most of the material, as far back as post WWII. This book is an excellent example. Much is made (accurately) of corruption in the Church. However, I listened in vain for a single word about the true and devout Christians , especially good monastics, who built and ran hospitals, cared for lepers, fed starving people, nursed and buried plague victims at the risk of their own lives. This is a flaw that is deliberate, too obvious to overlook. Liberal elites present themselves as "balanced", taking care to find the good in favored groups. I t would be a pleasant surprise if the same respect was given to Christianity.

Historia
Lord Guy Carlton, late of His Majesty’s regiment and weary from the war in France, has only wine, women, and song in mind when he rents Number 67 Clarges Street. He certainly has no desire for a serious attachment! Then his merry eyes spot the lovely but very proper Miss Esther Jones. Though Esther’s business acumen has made her one of the richest women in England, her innocence could make her a victim of the wild ways of the ton - unless the downstairs staff at Clarges Street devise a campaign to reform the rake who is laying siege to her heart.

Historia
Is Number 67 Clarges Steet the unluckiest house in Mayfair? Every season the beau mondes of the Regency would hire a house in the heart of London’s fashionable West End at disproportionately high rent for often inferior accommodation and yet Number 67 Clarges Street, a town house complete with staff, remains vacant from year to year. Could it be that it is associated with ill luck and even death? Something must be done so that the servants of this house don’t lose their livelihood.
