Historia
On a cool, overcast afternoon in April 2016, a salacious tip arrived at the L.A. Times that reporter Paul Pringle thought should have taken, at most, a few weeks to check out: a drug overdose at a fancy hotel involving one of the University of Southern California’s shiniest stars—Dr. Carmen Puliafito, the head of the prestigious medical school. Pringle, who’d long done battle with USC and its almost impenetrable culture of silence, knew reporting the story wouldn’t be a walk in the park. USC is the largest private employer in the city of L.A., and it casts a long shadow.

Interesting story about wealth and corruption, with an over the top narrator
Revisado: 08-10-24
Being a devotee of the LA Times, it was fascinating to hear the corruption of not only the cities of LA and Pasadena, USC, but also the LA Times itself.
My main problem was with the narrator. His breathless over the top presentation of every scandal became tiresome. He presented the author as a holier-than-thou individual. I had to skip ahead when things got too extreme.
But the moral of the story is clear: if you are white and rich you can make up your own rules in Los Angeles.

Historia
Tom Wolfe - one of the 20th century’s foremost voices in cultural criticism - went from local news reporter to international icon in 1968, with the publication of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Now voiced with vivacity and vigor by Audible Hall of Fame narrator Luke Daniels, the non-fiction swan-dive delves into the world of hippies, hedonism, and everything in between.

Great story almost ruined by the narrator
Revisado: 05-22-23
I wanted to revisit this book 50 years after first reading it. The book is a well written chronicle of a unique moment in history. Luke Daniels narrates it with an attitude that is often condescending and annoying. Tom Wolfe wrote long passages in sound effects and stream of consciousness and the narrator goes over the top to reflect this. It left me cold and almost wanting to turn the story off. Hang in there, the story is worth it.

Historia
Steve Martin met his good friend Adam Gopnik three decades ago, and in that time, Gopnik has always marveled at Martin’s ability to flourish in a wide variety of artforms: magic, comedy, art collecting, writing, and music. In So Many Steves: Afternoons with Steve Martin, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik creates a new type of profile: a year’s worth of conversations with Martin where Gopnik pulls back the curtain on his friend’s illustrious career.

Love hearing Steve Martins journey, not so much the narrator
Revisado: 05-20-23
I have always loved Steve Martins absurdist humor and comedy. It was great to learn about the arc of his career. Unfortunately Adam Gopnik, the interviewer, was really too opinionated and directional in his interviews. Too much opinion and not enough curiosity. But I enjoyed the visit with Steve.

Nice Idea, boring book
Revisado: 12-26-17
What would have made I Like Giving better?
I know it is better to give than to receive, but this book did not really enlighten that concept much for me. It's orientation was too Jesus-focused for my tastes. But then I guess I should have noticed that it is published by Christian Audio.
Also, at one point the author states that he gives away 50% of his income every year. I was wondering if he is a clergyman, so his income is non-taxable to start, because he gives away everything to individuals insteadt of 501c charities, so he would get no tax deduction for this giving, making it quite an expensive proposition.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Alexander Hamilton
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He was OK
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from I Like Giving?
I would choose some other stories that are broader in scope ar involved other cultures outside the USA.
Any additional comments?
nope

One of the dumbest books I have ever encountered
Revisado: 12-04-10
Stuart Wilde presents about 60 minutes of new-age mumbo jumbo. If I could get my money back, I would be happy. This was a huge waste of my time, but luckily it only lasts an hour. PLease do not buy this audiobook, it really is a waste.

Historia
According to Whyte, we humans are involved not just with one marriage with a significant other. We also have made secret vows to our work and unspoken vows to an inner, constantly developing self. Whyte's thesis is that to separate these marriages in order to balance them is to destroy the fabric of happiness itself; that in each of these marriages, will, effort, and hard work are overused, overrated, and in many ways self-defeating.
