Historia
When Ann Woodward shot her husband, banking heir Billy Woodward, in the middle of the night in 1955, her life changed forever. Though she claimed she thought he was a prowler, few believed the woman who had risen from charismatic showgirl to popular socialite. Everyone had something to say about the scorching scandal afflicting one of the most rich and famous families of New York City, but no one was more obsessed with the tale than Truman Capote.

Revisado: 03-03-24
This is the best book about Truman Capote and his friends that I’ve experienced so far. The narrator of the audiobook is excellent.

A good story well told
Revisado: 11-20-23
Meryl Streep is the perfect narrator for this sweet and interesting tale about love. It’s narrated in the first person by the admirable protagonist, who was once a beautiful young actress and movie star. The cherry orchard is a main feature.

I imagine many priests like this
Revisado: 05-21-23
This priest in the story is stubbornly naive snd deceives himself throughout. I’m sure there have been many such people who refused to acknowledge what was really happening and probably still is happening. Too bad the RCC has not been abolished.

Historia
Marguerite, a beautiful woman, has disappeared from her small town in Upstate New York. But is foul play involved? Or did she merely take an opportunity to get away for fun, or finally make the decision to leave behind her claustrophobic life of limited opportunities? Her younger sister Gigi wonders if the flimsy silk Dior dress, so casually abandoned on the floor, is a clue to Marguerite's having seemingly vanished. The police examine the footprints made by her Ferragamo boots leaving the house, ending abruptly, and puzzle over how that can help lead to her.

Clever and horrifying
Revisado: 03-19-23
Another great cliffhanger from the inimitable JCO. She is fearless. This novel was deeply fascinating and horrific, but very quietly horrific, and leaves much to the imagination. Not sure about certain things still. The narrator got it exactly right, in my opinion. Just the right combination of young girl and clever fiend.

Historia
Little Marek, the abused and delusional son of the village shepherd, believes his mother died giving birth to him. One of Marek’s few consolations is his enduring bond with the blind village midwife, Ina, who suckled him when he was a baby. For some people, Ina’s ability to receive transmissions of sacred knowledge from the natural world is a godsend. For others, Ina’s home in the woods is a godless place.

Hideous violence

A cruel story with awful people all victims of superstition and poverty. The plot was interesting enough to keep me listening until the end, which was a far cry from satisfying.

Thomas Mann brought to life
Revisado: 12-22-21
Very believable fictional bio of Mann. It’s well balanced showing the real man with his faults and admirable qualities. The narrative often comes straight out of Mann’s mind though told in the third person. Well done and interesting. The audio version is excellent. Such excellent narration.

Historia
In this striking, enormously affecting novel, Joyce Carol Oates tells the story of two very different yet intimately linked American families. Luther Dunphy is an ardent Evangelical who envisions himself as acting out God's will when he assassinates an abortion provider in his small Ohio town while Augustus Voorhees, the idealistic doctor who is killed, leaves behind a wife and children scarred and embittered by grief.

Extreme violence
Revisado: 09-09-17
For me this turned out to be horrifically bloody and seeming to really enjoy the gory details. All the while the murderers are viewed by the narrator and themselves as maintaining a kind of sweet innocence totally justified.
