Humphrey Carpenter does a wonderful job describing Tolkien's world, especially Oxford, and he is especially good at capturing the background note of high grumpiness, which Oxford dons are known for. The narration is superb and itself very English.

Horrible Mispronunciations

The book is an excellent account of the early Church. The narrater however was poorly schooled on how to pronounce names. Even the fussiest Oxbridge classicists would find this distressing. The positive side is that it makes the listener pay close attention, thinking carefully about whom he is referring to.

No Cussler Fingerprints On This

Very disappointed with this book, and I don't think I can finish it. It is so far below the standard that the writer Clive Cussler once set. I didn't hear his voice at all in this mediocre story. The ethics of this marketing strategy, trading on the name and characters once created by an author I much enjoyed, are certainly questionable.

A Socialist Paradise?

I think Canada is awesome too, but I don't think of it as a socialist shangri-la. This audiobook is mostly about a particular political perspective, and I don't think the author speaks for many Canadians I know.

Robotic

This subject matter does not make for a good audiobook. The printed version has many illustrations to help the reader, but of course these cannot be rendered as audio. This is the first audiobook I've listened to where for the first five minutes you get the table of contents. I'm not even sure whether the narrator is a real person or a machine.

Lucas Davenport near retirement

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I didn't recognize this Lucas Davenport. Maybe he -- and his author -- are getting old. But not nearly as compelling as the earlier books in this series.

Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He's my favorite reader. Five stars!

This is an exceptional opportunity to sit in on the conferences of a true master of the spiritual life. I found Merton's pedagogy particularly interesting, how he led with questions. He had a delightful and engaging sense of humor too.

A Decididly Different Direction

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The voice is different, so I'm not sure that John Sandford actually penned this novel, but it is an absorbing tale of Middle Eastern politics encroaching on the tidy world of southern Minnesota.

Perfection

The late Henry Chadwick's English translation of the Confessions will likely never be excelled. It is an exceptional piece of scholarship, of the highest literary standard, from one of Oxford's supremely gifted. And what a brilliant move to present this audiobook with the compelling voice of Richard Ferrone (whom I came to appreciate in the John Sandford novels, a decidedly different genre)! Mr. Ferrone renders the subtle prose of Augustine flawlessly and sympathetically; in my imagination Augustine will henceforth sound like Ferrone! This combination gets my vote for the Nobel Prize of Spoken Literature. The best Audible book ever.
