Disappointed...But There's Some Hope.

First off, this is probably my favorite book series. But this is probably my least favorite of the bunch.

The good:
We get to hear more from Owen (I'd read a whole series on him!) and a certain Icelandic vampire. Much of their treatment is done well.

The missing:
There seems to be a significant lack of the banter that made many of the earlier books hilarious, especially with Atticus and Oberon, but often with Atticus and anyone. The conversations with Oberon, Leif, Hal, The Morrigan, Coyote, etc... really make the earlier books enjoyable.

The bad: (spoilers!)
Granuaile has gone from bland to really annoying. Her focus on global warming and daddy issues is not only tedious, but also ridiculous. The portrayal of her stepfather as some sort of frothing monster because he's in the oil business is downright silly. The scene in the office was despicable and makes me dislike her.
Then there are the questionable choices. I'm used to Atticus making stupid choices such as not killing Verner at the first encounter, but siding with evil in the battle along with Brighid comes off as a betrayal.

Overall, if you're a fan of the series, you should read it as it does offer some closure on things. But let's hope the final installment is better.

One of the Best Series in Literature

This novel starts a little slow and sometimes uses a bit much of anachronistic language. It picks up though and is well worth it. This is the beginning to an amazing series of books. I can't recommend reading this series enough. It shows not only the journey through life but also what it means to be man (in several contexts).

I haven't listened to the other narrator of this series, but Patrick Tull does an excellent job here, as always.

Can't Overcome It's PC Worldview

It goes like this. Islam is far better than Christianity (despite their constant capturing of slaves) and is benevolent to Christians and Jews. However, Christianity is evil and the only good Christians are those who are not really religious. This leads to rather flat caricatures in most supporting roles. The novel ends up being much about a love story and a sundered family (to give points of view on both sides of the siege).

Still, it never overcomes it's modernist politically correct viewpoints that are laughable to anyone with a pretty good knowledge of the true history of the crusades.

Very Good and Thorough

This is an extremely well researched and meticulously documented biography.
It delves into the inner psychology quite well also.
However, it could have used a bit more editing for streamlining purposes. Many subjects are touched on repeatedly, especially slavery. So much so that by the end you're wishing the book would just finish. That being said, it was still very interesting at times with the Federalist / Republican split and the progress of the war.

Any additional comments?

The setting for the story is great, but the characters lack depth. Most characters have little progression throughout. The horse has none, as it's perfect and stays perfect. William has flare ups of imperfection, but they're never true problems in the story. Gavin is the main one with any progression. Also, this book like most modern books, gives a PC flavor to the crusades with the noble Muslims vs. bloodthirsty Christians. It detracts from the story but doesn't kill it entirely. Still, you love the horse and enjoy the story with mixed bits of history despite the flaws.
