Historia
In this timely and compelling audiobook, Harold Kushner addresses our craving for significance, the need to know that our lives and choices mean something. We do great things, and occasionally terrible things, to reassure ourselves that we matter to the world. We sometimes confuse fame, power, and wealth with true achievement. But finally we need to think of ourselves as good people and are troubled when we compromise our integrity to be successful and important.

A heart-helping, uplifting, surprising listen. Not what I thought a book about living a life that matters would be about but so happy to be wrong.
Definitely worth a second listen for me.

Historia
Things I’ll Never Forget is the story of a young high school graduate in 1965 who faces being drafted into the Army or volunteering for the Marine Corps. These are his memories of funny times, disgusting times and deadly times. The author kept a journal for an entire year; therefore many of the dates, times and places are accurate. The rest is based on memories that are forever tattooed on his brain. This is not a pro-war book, nor is it anti-war. It is the true story of what the Marine Corps was like in the late 1960’s.

Sadly. Brilliant.
Revisado: 04-04-23
This book is something I will never forget.
As a Marine veteran of the war in Iraq and Desert Shield/Desert Storm this book by James Dixon read like part of my own narrative. Although separated by more than twenty years at the start of my Corps career in the 80’s, I found that many of the Marine Corps unique vernacular, equipment, and experiences hadn’t changed from the Vietnam era through the Iraq/Afghanistan era. There’s comfort in consistency I suppose.
The war experience has not changed either.
Malcolm Hillgartner did an outstanding job narrating. So well, in fact, I could have totally believed he wrote the book.

Best Anne Perry yet!
Revisado: 03-14-23
I have read ALOT of Anne Perry novels and this one is the best by far! And not just because I got the series for free either! I loved the characters and story line - so different than most of todays story plots that have all the same characters and story lines: the only thing different is the geography. Anne Perry really delves into the lives of each and every character (and there are quite a few!) and still manages to keep you guessing until the end.
And don’t get me started on Davina Porter! No doubt this book would still be good but with her narrating each character it was outstanding! Honestly, I could listen to her repeatedly recite the periodic table of elements on not be bored!
GREAT book (and series so far!) if you like Victorian detective stories and worth the credit if you can’t get it for free.

Historia
Anyone who prays or has tried to pray and given up in discouragement knows praying, really praying, is not easy. Praying consistently seems almost impossible. Too often and too easily, prayer becomes a burden: one more item on an already overcrowded to-do list. Failing to pray becomes a source of guilt and stress as we must once again admit our inconstancy and procrastination to our father confessor. The purpose of this audiobook, then, is not to add to the burden, but to ease it by distilling the advice and experience of those who pray.

I started clipping notes but realized after the first chapter that nearly the whole chapter was clipped! SO much beneficial and useful information investing in a hard copy is a definite must for any Christians library.
Will listen to many times, no doubt. If you’re on the fence about purchasing, you will not regret using a credit for this outstanding short but powerful book.

More Please!
Revisado: 01-30-23
This narrative of the Fallujah war is mesmerizing. Having served two tours in Iraq it brings a lot of the missing pieces together for me. Be aware though there is a lot of information about specific units that may turn-off some listeners (and the mid-pronunciation of some names may turn off others that know the difference). The first-person interviews are first-rate. The details - some in the minutia - is overwhelming on several levels, but so necessary.
This can be a hard listen for those who participated in the Battle for Fallujah, and even those who served elsewhere in theater. It’s hard, but important for lessons learned and ANY potential future Middle East battles.

Worst.book.ever.
I loved the General’s Daughter and the characters and when I finished it, this book was recommended so I purchased it to continue the story. Oy Vay. What a mistake.
This book is just awful. So so boring. I listened to about 9 hours thinking it would get better but finally couldn’t listen for another 9 seconds. I’m not exaggerating! It never got better. I’ve listened to some stinkers before but this one takes the cake. It was just conversations between two people for like 30 minutes, then they’d do something for 5 minutes, and then they’d talk to each other again for another 30 minutes before anything else happened. AND THEIR CONVERSATIONS WERE PAINFULLY BORING!
Two stars is extra generous.

QUICK! Someone get a thesaurus!
Revisado: 12-22-22
Oy.
Shout. Roar. Bellow. Exclaim. Cry out. Etc., etc. The list goes on but in just two hours of listening to this book were any of these words used? No. Not once. Over, and over, and repeatedly over, the only word this author can think of is ejaculate. There is not one.scene so far where someone didn’t ‘ejaculate(ed/ing) about something. Sometimes TWICE in one scene. I’ve counted TWENTY-SIX times already and I’m only two hours in! It’s maddening. It’s hard to believe this was the only word in common use during the authors time that conveyed the action. Impossible to believe.
And if each and every character in this book said “what an extraordinary child” once, they said it a half dozen times. Each. I kept listening, not for the enjoyment or to hear the story, simply to count the number of times these two insanely mind bending words/phrases were muttered.
But I can’t take it anymore. This book is the worst. Who said books are better than the movie? Clearly, they never listened to this one. If you listen to this book, be prepared to want to stab sharp implements in your ears.

It all begins with a hot-air-balloon trip and three bottles of champagne. Allan and Julius are ready for some spectacular views, but they’re not expecting to land in the sea and be rescued by a North Korean ship, and they could never have imagined the captain of the ship would be harboring a suitcase full of contraband uranium on a nuclear-weapons mission for Kim Jong-un. Yikes! Soon Allan and Julius are at the center of a complex diplomatic crisis involving world figures from the Swedish foreign minister to Angela Merkel and President Trump.

All too true
Revisado: 10-18-22
Outstanding first person account of the initial days of the OIF war. For a reporter, Evan Wright had a remarkable understanding of the military; technical hardware, strategy & tactics, and keen insight & observation of the Marine Corps enlisted & officer dynamics. Pulling no punches, his honesty in reporting the ever colorful vernacular of enlisted Marines and the sometimes obvious disconnect between the rank & file made this a book worth reading.
And the narrator was AMAZING. Nothing more frustrating that listening to military books and narrators mispronounce weapons, ranks, or locations. Additionally, his interpretation of each Marine’s character in the book was true to the script! Really good job!
