Historia
Michael Merrick is used to pressure. He's the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it out for his family, and he's all that stands in the way. Michael's girlfriend, Hannah, gets that. She's got a kid of her own and a job as a firefighter that could end her life without a moment's notice. But there are people who have had enough of Michael's defiance.

Good but something is off
Revisado: 11-27-23
This book felt a little rushed by the author. Not quite as much character development. The main character's girlfriend also read as far less mature than she was in previous books. Actually, so did all of the characters, except for Tyler. I missed a lot of the people we'd met in previous stories that never reappeared in this book, but were supposed to be part of their daily lives. Overall, the story felt like it was missing some of the personal dynamics that made the other books in the series feel more complete.

Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel...except he's not doing it. And no one seems to believe him. No one but a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans...and keeps him totally off balance.

Good story, with sensitivity flaws
Revisado: 11-21-23
I respect a story that includes characters who have characteristics that might cause an experience of marginalization. However, use of the "r" word and then having the character with a disability constantly defending against the term as though it's a huge insult, harms readers with intellectual disabilities. Also, when writing about people with physical differences, magically "curing" them of the difference thereby erasing it, isn't really the strong positive empowering advocacy message the author intends. It's essentially saying "Her skin looks like everyone else now" so she's "corrected" and therefore got her happily ever after. Versus having her embrace whatever gives her an unusual look and having others accept her. That's the stronger move toward inclusion.
I still loved both main characters. Perhaps the disability angle hasn't aged very well with the times.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Some solid emotional moments
Revisado: 11-18-23
The Good: Great story pacing, character development. A few surprises. Enjoyed 3-4 emotional moments.
The Not-So Good: In the grand scheme of a 3 book series, this is the muddling middle part of a story. I take issue with the main love interest having some toxic, dysfunctional personality traits and gaslighting the main character about them. Realistic? Yes. But the Ick Factor is high. Making someone guess which Q?s to ask and making it seem like it's all her fault for not asking? Take your shadows and shove them, buddy.

Couldn't finish. Didn't like either character
Revisado: 10-12-23
First of all, saying someone has gorgeous gypsy eyes...is a slur. Like saying n word eyes. If the person is Romani, say Romani. If he's Italian, just say that or dark eyes...
Second, her "deep talks" with the guy as an adult are the sort of talks we had at age 14. *shudder* He is allegedly a comedian and is never funny. He's often that macho dude who tries to take charge bc he's a guy who knows better than Any woman ever could. She's really dumb about a lot of things...especially for a doctor.
Teen angst scaled up to age 28 is just not working for me.

Historia
Sasha Pierce hasn’t had a single dream since she was a child...until she accepts a substitute teaching position in the charmingly witchy village of Old Middleton. Her first dream in twenty-five years ought to be enchanting, but her wonder quickly turns to shock when she realizes that it’s not a dream at all, but an entirely different sort of magic. Catapulted through an ancient portal into the fairytale kingdom of Between, Sasha’s astonishment is swiftly upgraded to panic when she accidentally performs a supposedly impossible feat and is declared the True Queen of Between.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 09-28-23
This book is split in half. First half tells the woman's side of the story. The second half presents the man's perspective. Neither side really completes the story or character arc in Any way so it feels incomplete. The male narrator was my favorite. The first half had a Lot of whining. Cringey. I gave it a few stars because I liked the world and had 2 laughs. Had the plot gone somewhere, I'd rate it higher. I feel like I wasted 30 hours. boo

Points off for unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 09-11-23
Perplexing place to end a book.
I think the plot could have been wrapped up in about 2 more chapters and still left enough room for more books in the series. So that makes me feel like my time, as a reader/listener, wasn't managed well.
I enjoy the characters and the world the author has created. Occasionally in book 1 and this second in the series some word choices throw me out of the story. But I overlook those moments because there's a lot to enjoy here. If not for the ending, I'd have rated it 4.5 stars

Historia
The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs. Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down.

I'd give the story 4.5 stars
Revisado: 08-21-23
A good read. I'd give 5 of 5 stars if the character, Jack, had a bit more development. Was interesting to get an inside look at academia. Author left plenty of room to explore more of this world and the character relationships in a series but this novel works fairly well as a stand alone. Note: the mature scenes are described with some potentially coarse language

Finlay Donovan has been in messes before—after all, she's an author and single mom who's a pro at getting out bloodstains for rather unexpected reasons—but none quite like this. After she and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they may have "borrowed" in the process of saving the life of Finlay's ex-husband, the Russian mob got her out of debt. But now Finlay owes them.

Good but not as polished as previous books
Revisado: 02-07-23
I really like the main characters. I think the story was enjoyable. The author tends to open a new question toward the end which leads us to wanting the next book right away. It doesn't usually feel like a cliffhanger but this one kind of does because some small details left out of the main plot diminishes a sense of reader satisfaction. Before your mother hero can run off to solve the next crisis, who has the kids? and what was the deal with the ex poking around the house? I need closure on the old mystery story loops.Just fill those gaps in for me and I'm ready to jump on board for the next leg of this wild journey.
Also, I could have used some description of each cop to keep them separate in my mind. We were introduced to a lot of law enforcement at a camp and there's potential love interest cop and then one mass of characters I think of as blob of cops.

In The Beach Club, the juicy first novel by Elin Hilderbrand, a series of personal dramas are played out during one summer at a Nantucket Beach Club. It's about the love of summer, summer love, and the special feelings we all have for that special summer place—in this case, a hotel and an island.

Engaging Story. Complex characters.
Revisado: 01-04-23
Not sure when this was written originally. There were throwback references to VCRs and answering machines that made me wonder about the time period. I listened to this during the winter and it was a good escape. There were moments when any character could have been difficult to like as a real person, but maybe that's just more realistic? Overall, a good book to get lost in a different place and time and in other peoples' problems.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
