I read several reviews before I bought this audio book and I have now lost all faith in people to give accurate reviews. I really tried to enjoy this but there were a few things i just couldn't get past causing me to abandon the book about three hours in. First the narrator speaks like he is reading to a group of 6 year olds and his delivery just doesn't seem to fit with military sci fi to me. Second and more importantly this book is written about US Marines and having spent eight years in the Marine Corps I can tell you that the author has no idea how Marines speak or act. His characters repeatedly refer to themselves as soldiers which marines would NEVER Do. Soldiers are Army, not Marines. He is supposed to be a sergeant but his squad mates refer to him a couple of times as their C.O. which is short for Commanding Officer. He is at most a squad leader and infantry Marines might refer to their platoon commander, most likely a lieutenant, as their C.O. but they would never refer to another enlisted Marine as their C.O.. One of the Marines has a beard which is unlikely even if they are Raiders since they aren't deployed, Ok maybe a Marine might grow some stubble while on leave but a beard is unlikely. Also a female Marine Sniper in a Raider or Force Recon unit is lovely and progressive but not accurate, If you are going to write about Marines, at least do some research and I don't mean watch movies about Marines. They mess it up all the time. I mean talk to actual Marines and go from there. You may enjoy this if you have no actual knowledge of Marines but unfortunately for me and this Audio book, I do.

This audio book is unique for me in that it had some issues that were really bad for me but I strangely sill enjoyed it. Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The Story:

The main character (Cat) is so childish and stupid that virtually every decision she makes is so ridiculous that it defies explanation. She keeps demanding to be allowed to leave her biological father's house even though it has been explained to her that the other pack is trying to kill her. Her father who has a tragic story that led to him having to leave her on the door step of her adoptive parents ( as if its that easy in real life ) is treated as a cartoonish character that marches around yelling "Obey me because I am the Alpha" like some kind of one dimensional idiot. Despite the danger Cat keeps trying to escape to be with Bass who is the son of the Alpha of the pack that wants her dead as they have fallen in love for absolutely no reason other than they arrived in each other's presence. In fact Cat keeps yelling at her father that he isn't her dad and that her dad was the man who raised her and is now dead because Bass's pack just ran them off the road. To Cat it is all clearly her father's fault for letting her go as a baby, but Bass gets a complete pass for trying to kill her and her family. I mean for all Cat knows Bass himself is the wolf that made her adoptive parents wreck. It's all good though because Bass has abs. Cat and Bass eventually make their escape and Cat's dad sends men after them to bring her back. Bass Kills two of them and Cat almost kills another to stay away only to decide the next day to go back and sort it all out. The men they killed are never mentioned again as though they didn't matter. I did like the overall story of the war between the packs and the tragedies that keep the conflict going and there were some good action sequences, the dialog is sometimes cheesy and made me laugh a few times unintentionally with it's silliness but I think this was written for teenage girls of which I am not and I honestly don't even remember how I got this audiobook in my library.

The Audio Performance:

It was well done, except for the grandmother which was voiced so stereotypical that it made me laugh out loud.

Took me a little while to get into it but it picked up nicely. Sound affects and music were unexpected based on previous audio books but were pretty cool.

I was surprised by how much respect I gained for Kevin Hart after having listened to this audio book. I admire his refusal to give up when faced with adversity and failure, and he faces a lot of both. He and I are separated by race, culture, geography, and upbringing yet I find myself admiring qualities that transcend all those things: Honesty, humility, perseverance, love of family, and the ability to admit mistakes and learn from them. Well done, sir.

I read the original seventh sword trilogy in the late 80's and thought it would be neat to listen again on audiobook. Then i discovered that a fourth book had been written and the excitement hit me hard! I enjoyed revisiting favorite characters from my youth and seeing how the world had progressed under Nnanji and Shonsu's leadership. The story was engaging and the ending poignant. However I found the change of narrator and the fact that he pronounced the names of major characters differently than in the previous audio books distracting at first.

A very satisfying conclusion to the original trilogy, if not what you would expect. On the surface it seems to be frivolous fantasy but in reality it makes you consider many moral, and ethical questions.

The adventure begins in earnest now as Shonsu, Nnanji and Companions leave the temple at Hahn and take to the Goddess's river. In this second book of the seventh sword series Wally must attempt to meet the requirement set forth in the Goddess's riddle while trying to be what is expected of him as a swordsman of the seventh rank (and mostly failing) While Nnanji must adapt as he learns his romantic notions of honor, right, and wrong often mean very little in the harsh reality of the world.

I really enjoyed the world building. The author has created a complex socioeconomic system that is quite interesting and unique. I also found the many moral dilemmas placed upon the protagonist to be interesting as well, and never fails to make you wonder what decisions you would make in his stead.
