Historia
Sophisticated Giant presents the life and legacy of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon (1923-1990), one of the major innovators of modern jazz. In a context of biography, history, and memoir, Maxine Gordon has completed the book that her late husband began, weaving his “solo” turns with her voice and a chorus of voices from past and present. Reading like a jazz composition, the blend of research, anecdote, and a selection of Dexter’s personal letters reflects his colorful life and legendary times.

Barbra Streisand is a special person and she has produced a special autobiography here.

A very personal and thoughtful telling of her life, artistic achievements, and professional contacts. Often funny, occasionally annoying, and clearly in need of editing but the author doesn't take advice on most anything.

Historia
One of America’s most celebrated novelists, Cormac McCarthy announced his towering presence on the literary stage with his first novel, The Orchard Keeper. Within the pages of this classic work, John Wesley Rattner, his uncle Ather, and bootlegger Marion Sylder find their lives dangerously entwined in pre-World War II Tennessee. There, the men’s tragedies and struggles are mirrored by the looming specter of industrialization.

Beautiful reading of an outstanding novel.
Revisado: 12-30-24
Another masterpiece of fictional writing by Cormac McCarthy which was his first published novel. The writing is matched by a sensitive, powerful reading in the intended vernacular which brings reader or listener into a specific tiny corner of the world with real people rendered with fulness and objective understanding. Highly recommended for an adult audience.

Historia
Winston Churchill is generally considered one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, revered for his opposition to appeasement, his defiance in the face of German bombing of England, his political prowess, and his memorable speeches. He became the savior of his country, as prime minister during the most perilous period in British history, World War II, and is now perhaps even more beloved in America than in England. This revelatory book takes on Churchill in his entirety, separating the man from the myth that he so carefully cultivated.

Extraordinary, highly engaging work of historical scholarship.
Revisado: 12-16-24
This is a masterpiece of historical scholarship with well founded opinionated views that change our understanding of many events and personalities. The reader does a marvelous job of expressing many nuances in the voice of Churchill utterances and those of many others. Written with wit, wisdom, and an impressive flair of vocabulary. The scope of history is wide and the new understandings it brings to the man and his milieu and his impact is extraordinary. A literary and historical work that will last for ages.

Cormac McCarthy writes with a language rich and alive. The narrator brings the nuance of this cultural substrata of rural North Carolina variety of speech. Unpleasant, bizarre, and perverse events nevertheless provide a profound insight into human behavior.

Pathetic story for those who need encouragement to live wisely.
Revisado: 11-28-24
A closing, sad, and pathetic story told in an insufferable voice by someone who learns slowly from painful experiences largely self-inflicted for those in need of their own recovery. Told by someone who has escaped addiction rather than the writers who warn about it while embracing it reluctantly like William Burroughs (e.g. JUNKIE), Charles Bukowski (e.g. FACTOTUM), and the brilliant narratives of Cormac McCarthy (e.g. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) to mention only three writers and a sample title from each, among many other titles they have provided.
Note on the quality of the writing here: It may be that a majority of the sentences begin with the word "I" which indicates (even given that it is a memoir) something about the character of the author as much as it does her perspective.

We tend to think of the Middle Ages as a dark, backward, and unchanging time characterized by violence, ignorance, and superstition. By contrast, we believe progress arose from science and technological innovation, and that inventions of recent centuries created the modern world. We couldn't be more wrong.

The strength of his argument coupled with the bountiful support from reliable sources makes his position utterly breathtaking. Highly recommended both for young students and established historians.

I saw this one-hander written and performed by DAVID HARE when it was performed on stage at the Public Theater and it holds up extremely well as a recording. It is a memory and a history as well as a reflection on human frailties and the power of compassion. The story I'd concise and moves quickly from topic to topic.
