Story

This is a story of grand scale and personal relationships. Balancing that is always difficult. The author does a great job with the personal relationships with Saran's determination and circumstances. Keleir's magical and ethical struggles, Their romantic partnership and so many others. I wanted to know more see more, and be with these characters.

That grand scale I mentioned is literally 3 separate realities called first second and third worlds. They exist as cautionary tales, threats, and other literary roles. I can appreciate and oooo and ahhh with the best of readers at all the promise they have, but the problem is that they flash in and out so fast that I'm not sure if I'd miss them if they were gone.

Also quick praise to the author that she managed to make a last minute twist, a plot device I usually dislike, not only plot relevant but enjoyable the more I thought about it.

Overall I will definitely be reading the next story.

Narration

Evan and Ryan are my new favorite narration duo right up there with Kate and Michael, iykyk! The heroes, villains, the side characters all of them are distinct and make me forget it's just two people narrating. Everything form the accent work delivery and prose engages the mind helps me see the scenes feel the emotions. Just absolutely love it and I can't wait to see what they work on next.

The cast is likeable. The banter, action, and detective work believable.

amazingly this one manages to do time travel without me hating it. When a story just goes in a circle it completely disengages me but this one pulls it off very well with emotional stakes and genuine change.

narration is also done great with various voices, pacing, and awesome moments.

the blending of magic and our reality is also done very well.

so why 3 stars.

Atlantis. The twist about atlantis just felt out of left field. yes there are ley lines and the sea and fishing but so much of the story focuses on proving the existence of the ley lines we don't get much into who uses them or who made them etc. It threw me off because I was going back over it in my brain jusy to see if I'd missed anything that could prove me wrong and I couldn't figure it out. so a twist for the sake of a twist? I'm gladenned by the ending but if you removed atlantis and just kept kidnapping mer it would have worked better.

This was going to be a three star for me and then the brilliant cycles of tradition, honor culture, character flaws, family strength just resonated with me down to my soul.

well done Fonda Lee.

Now you have to wait for the next one to release.

Another great installment! I waited for the audiobook to release before reading, because Jeff Hayes is the voice of these characters in my brain. Matt hit it out of the park...or jungle... with this one. I didn't think it was possible for a series to just keep getting better. This one has done so!

An elegantly ruthless introduction to the keen mind of Johannes Cabal. The MC's paper thin obedience of society's rules, his style, surgical disregard for occult pomp, and immovable will all make for an engaging amazing read. I want to know more of his past, why, where and how will he do the things he has planned. To any outsider he could seem arrogant or foolish, but his methodical approach makes every move a joy. The audiobook narrator also really pulled me in with the variety of voices and tones. Definitely looking forward to the next one.

This is my first indie book of 2022 and it is a terrific start! The period setting is realized beautifully and the suffering of Eliza is portrayed so realistically I had to stop listening. When I read the stories play out as visuals in my head and between the emotional hardship of bullying and physical harm was intense but absolutely moved the plot forward. This also helped me find another excellent narrator in Bridget Thomas who gives voice to the protagonist and villains fantastically. So a great plot, great narrator, and an absolutely welcome addition to the audible library shared by my wife and me. I hope to read more from GR Thomas soon!

Lives can change with one decision and from beginning to end I enjoyed Degara's adventure. Degara is a great protag and there is never a dull moment here, and events that are larger then Degara are at play. There is a lot great imagery and structure to this world and I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.

Laura Peterson does a great job with the cast and I hope she comes back for book 2

Joe Abercrombie is a master of many things, but his unmatched skill has to be breaking a reader's hopes. That's what happened in this book again and again. Despite the warning signs, history, and what I've read from him before the characters, new and old, always seem to have moments of introspection, crossroads, and everything else their flaws, their ambitions, their everything painfully human wins out.

Steven Pacey delivers a performance that sucks me in from beginning to end. From the sympathetic to the monstrous I can hear and feel the life he pours into them. Definitely an inspiration!

A one-sentence review would be if you liked the first series you'll like this one. Piper, Leo, and Jason are compelling protagonists because the challenges they face from their houses, their relationships, and how everything is changing for Camp Halfblood. Riordan does a great job of expanding lore that was already there in the prequel series but also introducing the new. What's most impressive is that each character is given time to shine in their own way while advancing the plot so a great asset here is the world + structure.

So by now you're asking why 4 stars, well because for me the whole mystery of Jason's identity didn't hook me. I had it figured out before the camp half-blood reveal, so the uncertainty for me wasn't in who he was but in what role/method/function is it all intended. Which will hopefully be answered in the next book. Also Piper and Leo were just more emotionally compelling than Jason.

Joshua Swanson delivers an engaging and entertaining read I look forwarding to hearing more of his work!
