Historia
Twelve hundred British soldiers isolated on the small island of Kheros off the Turkish coast, waiting to die. Twelve hundred lives in jeopardy, lives that could be saved if only the guns could be silenced. The guns of Navarone, vigilant, savage and catastrophically accurate. Navarone itself, grim bastion of narrow straits manned by a mixed garrison of Germans and Italians, an apparently impregnable iron fortress.

Kind of boring

I remember seeing the film many years ago, so I was excited to listen to this book.
I gotta say, it was much better as a film.
Every chapter is just a series of the heroes getting into and out of one predicament after the other.
I listened to the end, but I was glad when it was over.

Historia
The year 1894. The monstrous Hound of the Baskervilles has been dead for five years, along with its no less monstrous owner, the naturalist Jack Stapleton. Sir Henry Baskerville is living contentedly at Baskerville Hall with his new wife, Audrey, and their three-year-old son, Harry. Until, that is, Audrey’s lifeless body is found on the moors, drained of blood. It would appear some fiendish creature is once more at large on Dartmoor and has, like its predecessor, targeted the unfortunate Baskerville family.

Good but not great
Revisado: 12-30-24
I’m a big fan of Lovegrove. For my money, he writes some of the best books in the Sherlock Holmes style.
I’ve listened to four or five others before this one so I was really looking forward to “The Beast of the Stapletons.” To be completely honest, I was a little bit disappointed.
Whereas all the other books, I’ve listened to by Lovegrove. I’ve been very compelling, I felt like this one kind of dragged on. Honestly, I think it could’ve been an hour or two shorter.
Narrator, on the other hand, was extraordinary. He does several voices very well and is very believable.

Revisado: 12-19-24
I really wanted to like this book. I have a collection of Christmas audiobooks that I listen to every year. Of course, almost everyone is familiar with "The Gifts of the Magi." It is an old standby in the Christmas short short cannon.
That is the first story on this book and perhaps the only one worth listening to.
I found the other stories almost completely uninteresting and uninspiring.
To make this book even more of a disappointment, the narrator is absolutely atrocious. He is almost completely monotone. There are a few stories where some of the characters speak in rural accents. (For example, ending the present participle with in' instead of ing.) The narrator does not even try to get into character for those voices. He continues in the same monotone.

Christmas morning 1902, London, England. A bottle of fine French wine from the Côte de Beaune region of France, intended as a gift from Mr. Sherlock Holmes to his old friend Dr. Watson, is found to have been drained of its aromatic spirits during the night and filled with sand. But not just any sand.

Nice knock off
Revisado: 12-15-24
I am a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes books and actively seek out some of the contemporary authors. I picked up this title because it was Christmas themed.
The author has Conan Doyle’s style down. The language is Sherlockian.
Really, my only disappointment is that it is not a serious Holmes short story, but rather a humorous derivative.
Good, but not great.

Cute but not for me
Revisado: 12-12-24
I love Christmas books. "A Christmas Carol" is among my favorites. (As an aside, the Patrick Stewart rendition is off the hook.)
This book, while it follows same story line (kind of) was just too silly for my taste. It really did not capture any of the heartwarming, self reflection and Christmas spirit of "A Christmas Carol."
Perhaps I went in with unrealistic expectations. I have listened to (and enjoyed) R. William Bennett's "Jacob T. Marley" several times. I feel like that title is much more true to the original and a much better prequel.

Historia
This collection of short stories by Anton Chekhov are all set at Christmastime. Rather than depicting a sentimental image of Christmas, Chekhov paints a picture of the harsh reality faced by many of the poorer members of society during a bitter Russian winter, while still injecting elements of pathos and humour. This collection includes At Christmas Time (Parts 1 & 2), Vanka and The Shoemaker and the Devil.

Disappointed
Revisado: 12-08-24
I particularly like Christmas short stories. I picked up this title because I saw that it had three short stories one of which I was familiar with.
I was pretty disappointed.
Two of the three stories are Christmas related, really on tangentially. I found myself asking at the end of both, “what’s the point?“
The third story comma, which has nothing to do with Christmas is only the real saving grace. It was interesting, but I could’ve lived without it.
The good news is that the book is only less than an hour, so I finished it quickly.

Historia
It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

Another great book by Lovegrove
Revisado: 11-28-24
I am a big fan of James Lovegrove. I picked up this title because of the Christmas theme. I must say that, while it takes place during the Christmas season, that is not really the focus of the book.
It is a very well-written, Sherlock Holmes whodunit. It kept my interest from start to finish.

Outstanding on Several Levels
Revisado: 11-19-24
I am a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes short stories. It is one of my favorite genres.
James Lovegrove's work is exceptional. He captures the true spirit and feeling of the original Conan Doyle works on so many levels. His language sounds like Conan Doyle and his plots unfold in a very similar fashion.
This book is three shortish stories, with a common theme and characters throughout. I found each very entertaining and taken as a complete book, they were nothing short of exceptional.
Dennis Kleinman's narration was nothing short of exceptional as well. I love the voice he adopts for Holmes, but he also does a marvelous job with all of the other characters. There are at least eight or ten different characters who speak throughout the book and Kleinman has a unique voice for all of them.
If you like the Conan Doyle work and are looking for more that is as good (or dare I say "better"?) this title is for you.
Don't get too caught up in the "Winter" part of the title. While many of the scenes take place in winter, it is not really a central theme.

Historia
This volume presents some of Arthur Conan Doyle's unduly neglected masterworks of suspense. Each begins in a quietly factual way, which makes all the more dramatic the crescendo of fear and puzzlement that ensues as each startling new circumstance is revealed. Even without his supremely logical brainchild Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle shows that his tales are unbeatable for thrills and excitement.

Good but not great
Revisado: 10-14-24
I really like the Sherlock Holmes stories and I also like classic horror stories, so when I found out that Conan Doyle had written short horror stories I had to check this out.
I have to admit that I was underwhelmed. I did not really most of the stories that interesting or compelling. Keeping in mind that 19th Century horror is not like today's Steven King or anything like that. They are, by and large, more tame and just "feel" more archaic. That is not the problem. I was expecting that.
That said, I hate to say it but there was really nothing much to most of them.
Oh well.

A very interesting listen
Revisado: 10-02-24
I really enjoyed this book. The writer does a really good job of doing a very deep dive into the different kinds of whisky (or whiskey, if you prefer) and all of the elements that go into making each whisky taste different.
There are separate chapters about the styles of whisky, the grain, the mash, the yeast, the distillation process, the different kinds of still, the warehouse and several other variables.
Despite the fact that the book is extremely detailed (almost geeky) it remains a very interesting and engaging book to listen to.
I would go so far to say that, if you are REALLY interested in the fine details, you will definitely learn a lot. I, on the other hand, just listened to be entertained and I was not disappointed.
