The AI writing style is heavy on adjectives, repetition, and a weird kind of patronizing encouragement. And the Virtual Voice had trouble with pronunciation sometimes.
I doubt I'll try one of these AI books again.

Historia
Physiological constraints confine our bodies to less than one-fifth of the earth's surface. Beyond that fraction lie the extremes. What happens when we go to them? Dr. Kenneth Kamler has spent years observing exactly what happens. A vice president of the legendary Explorers Club, he has climbed, dived, sledded, floated, and trekked through some of the most treacherous and remote regions in the world. A consultant for NASA, Yale University, and the National Geographic Society, he has explored undersea caves, crossed the frozen Antarctic wastelands, and more.

Love how the author reveals the nuts and bolts of our bodies' amazing adaptability to extreme conditions. But he also explains how important mental, emotional, and even spiritual strength and adaptability are to survival.

Historia
The Emperor's daughter Mercedes is the first woman ever admitted to The High Ground, the elite training academy of the Solar League's Star Command, and she must graduate if she is to have any hope of taking the throne. Her classmate Thracius has more modest goals - to defy his humble beginnings and rise to the rank of captain. But in a system rocked by political division, where women are governed by their husbands and fathers, the poor are kept in their place by a rigid class system, and the alien races have been conquered and subjugated, there are many who want them to fail.

Probably the best 'Space Academy' story I've ever read. Great character development and plot, intriguing world-building, plenty of subtle villains.
Unfortunately, the narration is uneven. She mispronounces enough English words to be distracting, and also mispronounces some Spanish words. However, her character voices are very good.
I hope there's a sequel or two...

Fun, but I've read better.
Revisado: 11-13-24
Reminiscent of the "Secret World Chronicles" by Mercedes Lackey, et al. There are some important differences, though.
The plot is OK, but it's hard to detect any personality for any of the characters. The hero can resist anything except temptation, but neither can most of the other characters. Still, it's kind of a fun read...

Makes me want to go out and carry protest signs again! Despite many improvements, all over the world, women are still not equal under the law.
Why do the concepts of equal pay, freedom of speech, action, education, employment, and bodily autonomy frighten men so much?

Tired Tropes
Revisado: 10-14-24
Basically a shoot 'em up in space. There's a sad lack of originality: the evil aliens are reptilian, the two human adversaries might as well be called "Terran This" and "Terran That", the poor colonists are virtuous and the wealthy industrialists are greedy and duplicitous, and the bureaucracy is willfully blind.

I think this was the 6th or 7th time I have read/listened to The Curse of Chalion. I discover new treasures every time. This time I was particularly struck by the elegant structure of the book: the poetic language, subtle foreshadowing, and well developed world.
And even though I know the plot so well, it's still a great fantasy, with plenty of action and fascinating characters.

Historia
The violent birth of the universe was only the first bang of a very bumpy ride. This unfathomably cacophonous beginning has spawned blasts, implosions, cosmic cannibalism, collisions, and countless other fleeting energetic events punctuating the cosmos. Although often brief, these transient phenomena pack a powerful punch. Astronomer and science writer C. Renee James introduces us to her colleagues around the world, who are using pioneering research techniques to explore everything from the very first explosions in the universe to the dark energy that could destroy it all.

Don't read this alone...
Revisado: 09-03-24
This latest entry in the "Quarter Share" universe is dense with references to earlier books and off-stage characters. It starts slowly and never really gains any momentum, and ends oddly. The book's not likely to appeal to readers new to Mr. Lowell. However, I still have faith in him and will buy the next book.
