Historically Accurate
Revisado: 10-03-24
I love a good story wrapped in history. This book puts flesh and bones on historical facts that bring the listener into the adventures of everyday life in another time and place. The narrator did a wonderful job with all characters. If you like intergenerational adventure, faith, and clean romance, this book checks all the boxes

Historia
Montana 1925: Three brave kids from New York board the orphan train headed west. An Irish boy who lost his whole family to Spanish flu, a tiny girl who won’t talk, and a volatile young man who desperately needs to escape Hell’s Kitchen. They are paraded on platforms across the Midwest to work-worn folks and journey countless miles, racing the sun westward. Before they reach the last rejection and stop, the kids come up with a daring plan, and they set off toward the Yellowstone River and grassy mountains where the wild horses roam.

Great surprise ending!
Revisado: 02-01-23
I really liked this fictional tale woven with historic facts to lend authenticity to the story. One small detail... the narrator should have researched the pronunciation for the town of Wilkes-Barre. It is pronounced "Wilkes-Barry." It was quite jarring to hear the name of my hometown repeatedly pronounced "Wilkes-Bar." Sometimes names are not as they appear despite how they are spelled.
I loved the surprise ending!

Historia
The morning of January 12, 1888, was unusually mild, following a punishing cold spell. It was warm enough for the homesteaders of the Dakota Territory to venture out again and for their children to return to school without their heavy coats - leaving them unprepared when disaster struck. At the hour when most prairie schools were letting out for the day, a terrifying, fast-moving blizzard blew in without warning. Schoolteachers as young as 16 were suddenly faced with life-and-death decisions.

Former Broadway dancer and current agoraphobic Billy Shine has not set foot outside his apartment in almost a decade. Uncomfortable
Revisado: 11-11-22
The subject matter and scenes of child abuse were uncomfortable to witness, but they highlight the multiple failures of our social services and foster care institutions. Everyone should read or listen to this important story. We can and should do better to protect the children.

Just as good the second time
Revisado: 09-27-22
I first read this book while on vacation 9 years ago, and loved it then. When I saw the audiobook was out I couldn't wait to hear it. This book was just as good the second time around. The plot twists are inventive and will keep you guessing until the end.
