Historia
"Tethered to the cross" is how the renowned 19th-century English Baptist Minister Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) described the task of ministry and his approach to preaching. Tracing the development of Spurgeon's thought and his approach to biblical hermeneutics throughout his ministry, theologian and historian Thomas Breimaier argues that Spurgeon viewed the entire Bible through the lens of the cross of Christ.

Spurgeon Criticized
Revisado: 01-11-25
This book felt much more like a critique of a great pastor as opposed to a neutral overview of a man God used to further the Kingdom.

One of the best war novels
Revisado: 09-16-24
This book is not for the faint of heart but it is a great read. It punches you in the face with the horror of war, breaks your heart, and leaves you wondering about the meaning of it all. One thing that is for sure - those that served in that terrible war deserve our respect and appreciation

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

Freedom
Revisado: 03-30-24
Unbelievable story- If only everyone in the west appreciated the significance of freedom. This book left me profoundly thankful for the men and women who sacrificed so much so that we can enjoy liberty and democracy. Even more importantly, it reveals the miraculous power of God and prayer. Great book!

Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Our complicated history
Revisado: 12-04-23
The American West was an unprecedented experiment of primitive cultures being invaded by the western world. This is such an unbelievable story with heroes and villains on both sides. It is bloody and heartbreaking and inspiring and ultimately our story as Americans. Excellent book!

Historia
In Biblical Critical Theory, Christopher Watkin draws a winsome vision for biblical cultural engagement in which faithfulness to Scripture and sensitivity to culture walk hand in hand. If Christians want to speak with a fresh, engaging and constructive voice within our culture, we need to press deeper into the core truths of the Bible.

Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway's most beloved works. It is his classic memoir of Paris in the 1920s, filled with irreverent portraits of other expatriate luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein; tender memories of his first wife, Hadley; and insightful recollections of his own early experiments with his craft.

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Revisado: 04-22-21
Fascinating - what a great book about a complicated but unbelievably talented man. I must say I lost respect for Jefferson. I had no idea that he was so conniving and he was wrong about most everything. That was hard for this UVA grad to hear. Great read - highly recommended- almost never dragged. Now I’m going to go watch the musical.

Historia
Harry Blamires, a noted British Christian thinker who started writing through the encouragement of C. S. Lewis, his tutor at Oxford, makes a perceptive diagnosis of some of the weaknesses besetting the church today. He argues that the distinctively Christian intellect is being swept away by secular modes of thought and secular assumptions about reality. Blamires calls for the recovery of the Christian mind and challenges “not only secularism’s assault upon personal morality and the life of the soul, but also secularism’s truncated and perverted view of the meaning of life...."

Important and timely message
Revisado: 09-14-19
Blamires's view of the dangerous rise of secularism and his predictions of it's impact on the church have sadly turned out to be very accurate. This call to 'think Christianly' remains so important but it is increasingly difficult in this post modern culture.
