Historia
In his own captivating words, General Ulysses S. Grant describes the Wilderness Campaign, the almost anti-climactic surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. His depiction of the most crucial and hardest-fought battles of the Civil War, the near-disasters, and the bloody triumphs reveals a highly intelligent, profound, thinking man. Grant wrote his memoirs as he lay dying of cancer and completed the manuscript only a week before his death.

Best Presidential Memoir
Revisado: 10-16-24
Grant’s memoirs have the reputation of being the best of presidential memoirs. Now I know why. His clear, concise recitation of the facts is backed up with documentation. His views are candid. This provides a valuable point of view to a critical chapter in American history. It is too bad that his memoirs stopped with the conclusion of the Civil War. It would have been nice to know his views on Reconstruction and his years as President.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States and commander of the Union forces in the Civil War, tells the story of his life in his own words. In this opening volume, Grant covers his early years, including his time at the U.S. military academy at West Point and his service during the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor. Grant wrote his memoirs in order to rescue his family from debt and they were published as he lay dying of throat cancer. Today, they are an American classic.

Incredible insight
Revisado: 10-06-24
There is no way anyone can dismiss Grant as uninformed or uneducated after reading his memoirs. He writes with such clarity and is able to give incredible insight into this critical period of American history.

Historia
Despite his promising start as a young man, by his early 50s Chester A. Arthur was known as the crooked crony of New York machine boss Roscoe Conkling. For years Arthur had been perceived as unfit to govern, not only by critics and the vast majority of his fellow citizens but by his own conscience. As President James A. Garfield struggled for his life, Arthur knew better than his detractors that he failed to meet the high standard a president must uphold. And yet, from the moment President Arthur took office, he proved to be not just honest but brave.

Unexpectedly good

I expected a dry and uninspiring account of someone who is essentially a historical footnote. To my surprise and delight, this book brought an obscure figure to life and shed fascinating light on an important era in American history.

A great explanation of the difference between Darwinism, Evolution, Intelligent Design, and Creationism. It allows the reader to understand that there is a difference, that none of the theories have been proven, and that there is far from any kind of universal acceptance by scientists, despite what is frequently taught in schools or proclaimed in popular culture.

Historia
Academics, journalists, and popular historians agree: our greatest presidents are the ones who confronted a national crisis and mobilized the entire nation to face it. That’s the conventional wisdom. The chief executives who are celebrated in textbooks and placed in the top echelon of presidents in surveys of experts are the bold leaders - the Woodrow Wilsons and Franklin Roosevelts - who reshaped the United States in line with their grand “vision” for America. Unfortunately, along the way, these “great” presidents inevitably expanded government - and shrank our liberties.

This book challenges the conventional wisdom about what makes a president a good president. It has excellent instructions about the Constitution of the United States and the role of the president under it.
