A lovely story about the relationship between a daughter and her mother, complete with infuriating moments of embarrassment, perplexity, dedication, love, and the many lenses through which truth can be seen.

…but not so much. If you’re into romance and lots of narrative hand-wringing & puzzling remorse with a bit of sci-fi/physics thrown in as a teaser (which shows up as a main in event in the last hour) this is your book. The author spends a lot of time building up the climax, but probably should have spent more effort framing the science of the book. There are some court transcripts (nice touch), twists, & red herrings, but I still felt something wasn’t quite fleshed out. With less verbal agonizing by the narrators, more character development, and more science - much more science - I think this would have been a better read. Parts were overwrought, and others weren’t wrought at all.
At the beginning, I feel like I was swept away for a date with a promising author who hired a limo, driver, & promised an adventure, but we took a right somewhere at the two-thirds mark & ended up taking a walk in the park and had a couple of cold beers after. Not awful, but not awesome.

I did like the narrator & will look for more books performed by Justin Avoth.

In a beautiful weave of Jewish and Arab folklore, the story of the Golem and the Jinni continues through the early 20th century. Wecker’s attention to cultural history & world events isn’t overbearing, but serves as a muted backdrop that supports & never interjects the vibrant tale. It’s an unlikely love story, a fable, & a tale of friendship in all of its intricacies, joys, and challenges. With poetry, grace, and true craftsmanship, Wecker’s words are mesmerizing. There’s not a shred of second novel disappointment here.

George Guidell’s narration is masterful & soothing, and with only slight fluctuations, he switches from one character’s dialogue to the next. There’s no false raising or lowering of his voice - just subtle intonations that keep you from hitting the 30-seconds-back button to figure out who’s who. His classic style and voice are perfect for telling this mystical tale.

R.C. Bray’s narration is just right for Jeremy Robinson’s unleashed imaginative writing. Gritty voice and perfect inflections aside, Bray’s performance is a perfect vehicle that drives Robinson’s story with suspense, humor, and anticipation. While the story starts out sounding like an iteration of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” it takes a surprising turn into a wild romp mixing myth, religion, and sci-fi. It’s gloriously vivid (sometimes gory) & the characters are lovable. I’ve listened to several other of Robinson’s books and this one is at the top of the list.

Sci-if meets mythology meets off the chain imagination in this story. Robinson pulls out the stops. He seems to be writing a book he’d want to read & crams it full of great characters - a slinky, smart AI sidekick, a cast of wonderfully evil nemeses, super anti-heroes, and an FBI agent thrown in just to keep you off balance. RC Bray’s narration elevates a really fun ride to a 10 hour roller coaster extravaganza. Pretty sure everyone needs this book in their library.

I’m not sure I can even listen to this book. The narrator is flat, breathy, and her voice representations are awful. This is one to read in print.

Neil Gaiman is such a masterful storyteller - this is yet another wonderful story fueled by an unfettered imagination - a world where it is possible for a live infant to be raised by a graveyard community of the dead - all who “come to life” with their stories, quirks, kindness, and compassion.

Unlike so many authors who insist upon reading their books (and don’t do their own work justice) Neil Gaiman gives life to all of his characters with perfect tone and inflection. There are no false highs for female characters ; he just utilizes a slight turn of tone and injects the character’s personality. It’s easy to keep up with the changes and the narration is flawless.

If you like his other work - or if you’ve never listened to or read his other books, but enjoy well-written fantasy, this is a fabulous escape into another world - for adults and kids alike.

I can't quite decide how I feel about this book. It's a sort of a backwoods-Americana-voodoo version of ancient mythological stories from Greece and Rome. It's laden with roadblocks for the persistent hero, moments of despair, and an overriding dim light of hope that he can somehow save his young family from the horrors of his lineage. If I picked the book up for a read, I don't know that I would have finished it, but the narration breathes life into a colorless, hopeless underworld. Worth a listen if you're into Greek mythology, demons, and finding where the line blurs between good and evil.

Mind bending book about humanity and what, exactly, comprises being human. R.C. Bray is excellent, as always, in his rendition of the characters. Some of his interpretation of the dialogue are surprising and not what I would have gleaned had I been reading the book - love how the narrator shows alternative ways of understanding the story.

This is a typical haunted house story - good for Halloween, but not terribly sophisticated or imaginative. The narrator, Scott Brick, is always fun to listen to, but his talents are rather wasted here.

Unsurprising & trite, but okay for an October freebie.
