I don’t think the reader helped this novel at all, her voice was so flat and monotone. The novel’s plot too, about bright young things developing video games to great fanfare mostly, had that same blah-blah-blah-blah cadence.

I was enthralled by this book/audiobook from the moment it opened. It is an extraordinary story, an atmospheric evocation of a place that recalls Northern Ireland's troubles and the psychological and emotional toll it took on people. It shows how political troubles can warp a community. Anna Burns also evokes the inner world of an 18-year-old girl brilliantly, describing her sensitive and complex responses to the stresses around her. Despite what some reviewers here say, the plot is fast, nerve wracking at times, and frequently takes baffling, unexpected turns. There is also a lot of humor; the novel has very funny moments despite its darkness. I guess I shouldn't be shocked that people have had such mixed responses to it—it's an unusual novel. But I am so impressed, and can't wait to read/listen to more of this amazing author! Oh, and bravo to the reader! Her narration was a perfect match for this book.

Thin Premise for Novel Flogged to Death

Listening to this, I felt like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, again and again experiencing the same events. I don't understand how the author didn't get bored writing this book, with its endlessly looping plot line. What made it worse is that the premise — two young guys randomly giving away a small fortune to people in poor countries — is interesting and thought provoking maybe for five pages.

Disappointing TC Boyle novel

I quite enjoyed two other TC Boyle books — The Harder The Come and The Road to Wellville — so this novel's mediocrity took me by surprise. The writing is riddled with cliches and the characters are flat, one-dimensional stereotypes. It's a chore to listen to.

I am so impressed with James Langton's performance with this wonderful book. He helps to give the characters three dimensions and makes them come fully alive. And he delivers Wilkie Collin's excellent sense of humor with such skill. I can't remember enjoying an audio book this much. I would love to see Langton act in person.

This is an amazing novel — it captivated me like no other audible book has. I agree, the narrator can have a grating voice, but if you can get over it, her voice sort of works for the novel. For the sake of the book, try to hear it that way!

The Infatuations is brilliant, eerie, mysterious book, filled with many truths and wicked insights (wickedly accurate). I enjoyed it very much and wish more of Javier Marias' books were translated and on audible.

The plot is not well developed and is rather silly, and the characters are not much better than cliches. The author does, however, have some lovely descriptions.

This was a very non-subtle novel — not sure why the raving reviews. Plot and characters sloppy, clumsy and badly drawn.

Ian McEwan's novel is a glorious achievement of plot — it's gripping, suspenseful and surprising — and of psychological perspicuity. And it's very well read by Jill Tanner.

I adored this book, and the reader. Alameddine tells a quietly powerful story with his tale of an old bookish woman who is remembering her life, her relationships, the authors she has read, the history of the city she's lived in her whole life. She is wise and universal in her personal revelations. Not much happens, but when it does it is fascinating.
