I have read or listened to several books by Simon Winchester, this one I enjoyed the most. I learnt so many things about so many topics, from manufacturing to metrology. Winchester’s mesmerizing storytelling and his knack for bringing oddball characters out of obscurity are peerless.

John Valliant’s extraordinary storytelling talents are in full display in this book on one of the strangest corners of the Earth I have ever come across. A masterful blend of reportage with natural, economic and social history.

If you enjoyed The Professor and The Madman as much as I did, The Meaning of Everything will delight you. Simon Winchester is a masterful storyteller and an inexhaustible source of fascinating trivia about the English language and the people who worked on the O.E.D. Can’t wait to read (or listen to) more of his books.

I first got hooked on Margalit Fox’s storytelling when she was a star obituary writer at the New York Times. This book displays all her talents, recounting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s long and ultimately thankless crusade to free a wrongly convicted man. Peter Forbes’ masterful narration, switching regional accents and voice registers, brings every character in the book to life. Thoroughly enjoyable.
