It’s hard to be objective when Palahniuk is my favorite author. This book is particularly difficult to review in a spoiler-free way. Like most of his works, it begins with you having no idea what’s going on.

I found myself laughing hysterically at times and had to share some passages with friends because of the repeated or unusual words and phrases. I think some of the content works especially well in audiobook format, though this text, uniquely, references things like "feeling the pages," which you just have to overlook.

There’s a bit of trope subversion and meta-narrative at play.

Enjoyed for most part. The accent is necessary for the full effect. Dragged a tiny bit in Part 4, but no biggie

I'm trying to read every palahniuk book. i, wrongly assumed that this was another work of fiction. but I still enjoyed it and felt "engaged".

SPOILERS: So... um ... I need an epilogue to explain the ending. explain it to me like I'm 7. Was there actually anything supernatural? Was Paige actually crazy? Did the police let him go?

I've never read (or listened) to a book, deliberately written in terrible English. that was unique. i enjoyed the story. You do eventually get used to the weird wording, once or twice I wanted to say "no he would have said _____"

The accent was a little inconsistent. Usually it sounded Russian, but sometimes Italian, Spanish or Zohan (Adam Sandler).

This book gave me anxiety. Spoilers ahead. Seemed a little too real. The "C'est la vie -- that's Spanish for Gesundheit". I guess I don't get it? Just everything is wrong, is that humor, is it deliberate on the partof the character? I thought it was just saying Miss Kathie was dumb but then the narrator started doing it too. But if the joke is that everything they say is wrong, are all the other quotes and references dubious too? There are so many name drops, but they were mostly people before my time, so I think I was missing the bigger picture. I kept thinking the entire point of this book was a "what if Joan Crawford's house keeper had conspired against and eventually killed her." Maybe that's unfair.

As for the narration: right at the beginning the woman reminded me of the "Dive!" lady from class in the movie Throw Momma From The Train. But that thought faded quickly. I tend to be a little overly critical about mispronounced words, but in this case, I can't help but wonder if they were deliberate??

I'm trying to consume EVERY Palahniuk work. But if you're looking for a one off, I'd suggest choosing one of his books that has supernatural elements instead.

once again palahniuk found a way to catch my off guard. some of the elements of the story mimic things I've seen in other stories - but they're still done in a way that seems fresh

This is one of those books where you don't know what's going on till pretty late in the book. Early on I called it 'Tom Sawyer meets The Good Son' Ha! sweet summer child, am I -- although Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer are mentioned in the text, so maybe I wasn't as far off as I thought...
